  1. I was quite surprised as well Sharon (btw, I'm Jim, a 20+ year friend of Billy who says nice things about you), but in retrospect, I'm not AS surprised as I initially was. They are VERY cool books & I believe the price guide is just wrong on them. Larson or not, roughly $200 for a vf .... I'll take all the 57's & 58's anyone has. GREAT score on the Mystic too!!!! I'd be dying to see those white pages!!!
  2. I only see one book (not a scrap either RJ, ya fibber you). Once again ... only 1 book here .....
  3. Thank you for that Yeah, I would've paid more for it, but how much more I couldn't say for sure. I CAN say that since I didn't HAVE to pay any more for it, that enabled me to get the 58 a little more comfortably. They're the same grade, same pq & same price in the guide, but the 58 cost me $200 more, so yeah, I'd have easily paid that much more additionally for the 57. I feel the same way about that cover. It's just one of those hard-to-describe things that strikes you when you see it. I have also always dug how either Tryg Hagen or Cecil Coop wrote Larson's name on the helmet. BTW, those are the 2 employees of the Cruetz drugstore who are responsible for writing Lamont's name on most of the books. ALL of this (and more) information can be found in Jon's CBM #71 article. I hope some folks either dig out their copies or pick some up. You'll be glad ya did!!!
  4. Thanks Ryan, this exact book has been on my mind since I first saw it in 1999 (not constantly or anything), as I find myself returning to Jon's article with the Larson list in CBM #71 several times per year. I recommend it for anyone who wishes to have the list on hand, but also for the article & color centerspread pics. Every time I reread Jon's article, it strikes me again how when you read it, you can feel his excitement & enthusiasm for this collection & the hobby itself. It's a great "spirit lifter" if you're down. This issue also has a few great other G.A based articles. I can't recommend it enough.
  5. Well I'm glad that despite coming away empty handed, that it was still a positive experience for you and I DO hope you acquire a book or two sometime later in the marketplace
  6. Thanks pal!!! I've tried to "stay off" the Centaur path, as SO many are on it, HAVE been on it for a while and not many come to market (Berk books notwithstanding). When Centaurs DO come up for sale, they're usually expensive & often times have lesser pq, of which I am not a fan. I'm not exactly thrilled about c/ow, but Gator informs me that Centaur collectors have to take what they can get. I don't recall seeing any posts with wins, so I gotta ask, did ya snag anything out of the Berk collection?
  7. Thanks again RJ!! As you know, I had been admiring the Popular 57 ever since I saw it in the color cover gallery centerspread in the CBM issue with Jon's article. It's very surreal that it will now reside in my collection. I never spoke of it, to either you or Billy, but it was a secret top want. The 58 actually cost hundreds more, but as Jon himself had commented on these boards in the past, a run of Larsons is something you seldom see. So, thanks to him offering the majority of his collection for sale, I'll now have a tiny "run" of Larsons. Every one of my geeks came away with something for their boxes ..... of that I couldn't be more pleased!!!
  8. Many thanks pal! As you know, buying this one earlier in the day from another source added to my desire to acquire a few of Jon's copies.
  9. I just noticed that the cover artists name has almost the right letters to spell out the name of Metro's 2nd in command Funny book jumble!!
  10. My final book from the auction. Happy to get it
  11. My final lil niblet from the auction. Not much luck on day 5, as I kind of believe that some folks either wanted books from the last portion of the alphabet or (more likely), feeling the end was near, wanted to scoop up everything they could before it was over. It WAS a 130mph rafter shaker and I gotta say, I could've rented out 7/8ths of my seat, 'cause all I ever used was the edge!!!
  12. I was about to say these very same things, but then I read THIS post and all I can really do is echo your words, so .... well said and .... ditto
  13. Thanks pal! I bid on SO many lots & was under bidder on MANY of them. When I hear the name Jon Berk, I think of Larsons & Centaurs, at least I managed a bit of both.
  14. I hadn't even seen this thread. GREAT books everyone, with an extra TALL tip of the cap to MR.BEDROCK for crushing it!!!
  15. Diggin' this one & no, I didn't bid on it. I was savin' some loot for a few others
  16. I LOVE seeing everyone's purchases!! Here are a few from my first successful day.
  17. Thanks RareHighGrade has been a huge influence on me!
  18. I hate to admit that I'm not as heavily stocked on Flessel covers as I'd like, but here's another fave
  19. LOVE some Flessel Here is one of my favorites in my collection right now!
  20. The only copy I currently have a scan of ....
