  1. Here's a scan of the photocopy from way back. I don't own this book but I've pretty good idea who does. I wonder what this book would command if it hit the open market? $5k? $10k? More?
  2. I plan on putting a few GA items up...in fact, I only have GA items to put up at the moment.
  3. Sweet. I need one of those for my Pictureframe run. In fact, I think I need all the Pictureframe Spotlights.
  4. Shoulda bought that Human Torch # 4 from me instead of crappy Daredevil.
  5. Awesome pick-up! I suppose that means your high grade copy is available now?
  6. Thanks Paul, for keeping the art in its original state. I think dropping the newsprint color out of the gutters is a good move... I am very much looking forward to this volume (and will stockpile them for gifts!) "Art Out of Time" IS well worth checking out ... great Hanks story in it. I'm definitely interested. Tell your Mom to get in line. Wow. That's the first time I've heard the phrases "Your Mom" and "get in line" used together positively in the same sentence.
  7. What the hell ciorac, you hit the lottery or something this week? I'm beyond envious.
  8. Thanks I am happy with nice 7.5's to 8.5's if they have eye appeal . As you Americans say " more bang for your buck " I'm Canadian but I get your drift. Isnt Cananda still a colony of England No, its America's Great Northern Landfill.
  9. Welcome to the Dark Side. The Force is strong in this one.... or "Once you go Gold, they say you're too Old."
  10. No doubt. Even some of the DC guys are bound to get this one right.
  11. This is a tough one for me, being that I love the Fantastic Four and that they are my favorite of all the Marvel characters. I would love to own a solid high grade copy of that book. However, a very solid looking Detective Comics # 1 with decent page quality is not something that comes along often. Based purely on the "Will it ever come around again?" factor, I would take the Detective # 1.
  12. I remember looking at the heritage scan when it was a 7.5, and thought the grading was pretty tight. I don't think its a 9.0, but its a lot nicer then most 7.5s GA books out there.
  13. This one is no contest. Tec # 31. All day and all night. Easily one of the most memorable comic covers ever and a pretty important tone-setting story in the early Batman mythos. As for Tec # 35, I think its "hotness" and newfound desirability is largely lost on me. Besides, structurally, the # 31 looks to be more solid of the two.
  14. As I said earlier, there is almost an obsessive need by board members to pay less than GPA for a book, no matter how desirable it is or how badly they want it. It's like some kind of comic collector macho thing. I thought paying well OVER GPA for a book was the macho thing to do. Seriously, I've had some great luck recently buying a couple of genuinely rare and top census books for under previous recorded GPA prices. But it was due to factors like a). A collector changing their collecting emphasis and willing to take a loss. b). A dealer clearing out some stock for close to break-even. And since these were private sales, I don't expect them to show up in GPA. So, I get the benefit of paying less, but also keeping the GPA "last sale" price high on books that don't have any other copies circulating in same grade. I think all collectors that buy higher end material, after they've become seasoned, will know a unique buying opportunity when it presents itself and act accordingly. If the books presented to you never come around in grade, you'll tend to pay the asking price, regardless of what GPA or Overstreet have to say. The ability to recognize true scarcity and a unique opportunity is what seperates an advanced collector from the weekend warriors in my opinion. Bob related a story of picking up some awesome early FFs from Harley several years ago. He paid through the nose at the time, but his decision was well rewarded when it came time to sell. Some books just don't come along that often.
  15. When I think of a robotic pyromaniac and an ankle-winged Atlantean the first word that comes to mind is "realistic". Touche
  16. If the Crippen copy of Suspense #3 can command $50K, the Marvel Mystery #9 is a steal at $42K. I don't think you would ever lose money on this book and I'm sure there would be a lineup of buyers for a NM copy at $150K. I agree completely. I think the significance of this book goes beyond many of the great points stated here to a very basic one: the long-standing difference between Marvel/Timely and DC. Very early on, Marvel/Timely decided to pit two main hero characters against one another in a colossal battle of Titans. Who was the hero? Who was the villain? My how different a comic book can be when its not so easy to tell. While Batman was gleefully giving Superman reach-arounds for 50 years in customary ho-hum DC storylines, the Marvel tradition of realistic heroes airing realistic differences in a realistic world started very early on, perhaps back to this very issue. Okay, I know the DC guys are going to kill me for that comment, but it sure was fun to write.
  17. How to do you come up with a price on a book you haven't offered before, or don't have any sales information on from show cons or any other venues? ` Its a Shot in the dark in instances like that. Most dealers' solution is to assign some insane multiple for the book and see where it goes from there. As for GPA, let me offer my highest recommendation. I've saved thousands since subscribing. Its a useful tool, much more useful then the Guide in 90% of my purchases. It isn't perfect (page quality notations would be nice), but its the best $6.95 you can spend if you buy certified material with regularity.
  18. Hands down the MM # 9....after Marvel Comics # 1 & Captain America # 1, this is the definitive Timely key to own. Wait, maybe Tough Kid Squad # 1 trumps it a little....
  19. Not anymore. Now, $2.95 will buy you a new comic, but you can't even touch the grande Mocha at Starbucks.
  20. This is kind of a yanwer for me....Archie is well....not my favorite, and GLs are, well, not my favorite either. The nod goes to the GL just for the grade and the fact its a Black cover GA with White pages. Pure condition play by an admitted condition freak.
  21. Never gonna happen. Its the holy grail of Comicdom for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that only a select few have ever seen it. Don't expect that to change anytime soon.
