  1. I was going to say the Porky Pig cover from I think #8- my first guide.
  2. Definitely! It came out in the early 60's I think. The origins stories/key stories for the great GA superheroes are reprinted (Supes, Bat, Plaz, The Flash, Captain America, The Spirit, Wonder Woman, Hawkman...) Feiffer has commentary about each character and how they were developed. Great read- similar to the Origins Of Marvel Comics books that Stan Lee wrote in the 70's. I read this a million times when I was a kid in the 70's and still look at it today.
  3. I was going to send this one in! Shock suspenstories, right? I forgot which number.
  4. Great topic! I'm surprised this has not been covered yet- I have not seen it before.
  5. Great book! And a great read- real literature- sequential art.
  6. interesting. Probably very similar in ranks of value to the 1st overstreet price guide.
  7. I love it how key issues are not even noted- obviously all star 8 here. I'm sure PEP 22 has no notes next to it either. I think More Fun 52 and All American 16 would have the notations.
  8. can you post some prices listed? Obviously AC 1 and tec 27, but others too!
  9. Me too! Had one of them signed by Bill Sienkiewicz at NY comicom that year. I still have that book.
  10. I know Frank Cwiklik has written catalogs in the past. I always enjoyed reading his copy. And Frank is veeeery big, I think 6'9". I would guess it's Frank's work.
  11. I agree with adding Mitch to the list. I remember reading the article about him in the World Book Encyclopedia back in the 70's. He was very important to the collecting hobby. And the founders of CGC. I don't think comics would be selling for anywhere near their current levels without reputable 3rd party grading.
  12. I have heard that as Kirby aged, his handwriting suffered and he had a tremor in his sigs. I have a similar Kirby sig. I think it's legit!
  13. I love this book! Pekar really has a way with depicting human interactions in such an emotional manner. All of Pekar's books are a joy to read. RIP Harvey.
  14. I remember thinking- sounds like a good deal. Should I go for it? The seller was not a known entity on the boards. You man'ed up!
  15. In 2009 the CGC 6.0 AC #1 sold for $317k. The value of GA keys has exploded since then. Or have they always been exploding? I remember when GAtor bought a Captain America Comics #1 CGC 4.0 on the boards for around $14k probably around 2010.
  16. The forum discussed the 2nd appearance here. CGC recognizes Pep 23 as the 2nd appearance of Archie. Disclosure- I own a copy of Pep 23! (not this one)
  17. $21,252 That same book sold for $17,925 on Heritage in November 2016. Well, if that's the case, then it's definitely not much of a win at all on the resale of the book. I don't know, a $1200 profit two months later sounds pretty good to me. Unless CL bought it from Heritage, in which case they profited over $3300. That's 6% over two months. If you found an investment that made 6% every other month you would make 40% annually. Not bad. Of course there is risk that goes with this investment. The book could have sold for less.
  18. Agreed. Or just take a poll from 10 years ago before the Marvel cinematic universe was formed. It probably would have been Marvel #1 by a landslide. My post from CG I totally agree with this post. I think maybe our age is similar? I was born in 1966. MC 1 and AC 1 were the comics at the top of the pecking order, and while OSPG deemed MC 1 more valuable in the late 1970's, I always liked AC 1 more. My top three in order are AC 1, DC 27, MC 1. I would have to think a bit regarding the rest of the top ten. I also agree with FF 1 over AF 15, although I do regret selling my only copy of AF 15 around the time after the housing bubble burst (was that 2008/2009 or so?) and I thought I would get a better copy for the same price. That never happened...
  19. First, I love this thread! Although I prefer MC, they each have favorite panels of mine. I have posted on this before: The sailor smoking the cigarette before the introduction of the Sub-Mariner, and the female US agent removing her mask in the Curios shop in Cap 1. I thought those panels, and the mystery surrounding the plot at that point, was just perfect. My MC is missing the back cover and some panels from the last six pages (Kazar story) if anyone has some spare parts... The top image comes from my incomplete MC 1. The bottom images come from Jules Feiffer's book.
  20. Marvel 1. I would answer Fantastic Four 1 too, acknowledging its declining relevance. I guess movies drive the value of comics these days. It would not surprise me if most of the younger movie patrons have never read a Captain America or Avengers comic book. I know my kids have not.
  21. I feel very lucky to have purchased this a couple of years ago- by far my most expensive purchase. A boardie owned it before me and I think made a huge profit on the sale.
