  1. AF 15 3.0 just sold for $11.5k on clink. Wow. I sold my 3.0 on the boards in 2009 for around $3k with the idea that with the market crash prices would go down and I could afford a higher grades copy. That did not work out well.
  2. My Brief Review of BVS. By TheSurgeon. I do not consider myself a fanboy although I do collect GA comics, and I have not seen most superhero movies and do not like modern comics. When I do go to superhero movies I do so because my teenagers like them. However, I did enjoy BVS, and would give it 6-7/10. I enjoyed it much more than I thought from reading pre-release reviews. The crowds cheered with WW's appearance (my daughter loved that scene) which was pretty cool. One earlier reviewer either here or in Comics General wrote that he missed the comedic interludes present in the Marvel movies- that DC movies are WAY too serious. I completely agree. The audience and I definitely liked the few comedic lines and I think there should be more. I remember probably two comedic lines- one by Martha Kent when Batman rescued her, and I can't remember the other. To give some perspective, I did like the first Spiderman movie with Toby Maguire, maybe because I was younger, but I liked BVS similar to GOTG, maybe even more, and definitely more than the most recent Avengers which I did not like at all. I did not like the Thor or FF movies either. I would rate Iron Man much higher than all the others. Maybe it's my age, but I'm not a fan of all the fighting, CGI (although I did like Superman's takeoffs and landings in BVS,) and action in the movies. I like plots, which is probably why I like the initial origin stories of comic book characters when they are first developing, rather than the fighting that happens later on. My point is that this reviewer does NOT think the movie sucked; I actually enjoyed it and was not bored. My daughter and I are very excited for the WW movie, and I am considering shopping around for a Flash Comics #1. Thanks for tolerating this piece from a middle aged collector!
  3. Once a book has an EP rating, could it be restored to a 9.6 without any further harm? I guess I don't really understand the difference in buying an EP 6.0 or EP 9.6. Since the book already has the most restored label, why not restore it all the way to 9.6 if that would sell for more. Can any book be extensively restored to 9.6?
  4. Great initial post. I will turn 49 this year and also collected Marvel runs in the 70's/early 80's. I remember starting with FF 135 and moving backwards, then getting the mid 40's and moving forward, meeting in the middle. They had great stories that kept my interest as a 12-15 year old kid. I never really saw any GA comics except what I read in The Great Comic Book Heroes and loved the origin stories, and only started reading later issues around 8 years ago. Those non-origin issues do not do much for me. But I love collecting them just the same. More for the historical and cultural significance of the books.
  5. Those AEN collectables are amazing. THanks for posting. I have read that the painless dentist is the first known depiction of him in the late 1800's.
  6. Worked for me- I bought MD #1 and later #2 gaines file copies using WTB.
  7. Very cool. It's a Tommy Wade pedigree. I have a couple of early Actions (Action 15 and 18, I think) that had his name on the splash page.
  8. It's already a book! Kavalier and Clay! Not to mention Men of Tomorrow. Great stuff but probably a niche market for this stuff. I loved Kavalier and Clay (not so much the ending, but the first half.) Reading that brought me back to my childhood hobbies of comics and magic. After reading the book, I got back into magic/sleight of hand after around 20 years, and soon after back into comics. That book really struck a chord with me.
  9. So many great stories exist that would make great movies from that time period. WW/Moulton definitely would qualify. I did not know that after Moulton died, his wife and mistress spent their lives together. Could make for quite the salty movie. I think a story about the birth of comics and the artists in the lower east side of Manhattan (Delancey street became Yancy street for The King) would work. Immigrants, many of them Jewish, trying to find their way in America, fighting in WW II, and developing the themes and symbols that continue to resonate today. And of course the EC story is so interesting, where the company is holding on by a thread, and fortunately that thread was Mad which led to success for the company and defined popular culture for years. At least I think they would make great movies- I would go see 'em!
  10. Here is a link to a review of a new book about the history of WW and her creators.
  11. watch the wonder woman comics video from smithsonian channel (video starts after the advertisement) http://www.smithsonianmag.com/videos/category/arts-culture/the-real-life-lady-who-inspired-wonder-woman/#ooid=Rzc2oybzp34ZO-7-ZAZLcmPQxMCoFCmD Interesting but much detail left out. Wonder if those are all comics on the shelves? Yes- really limited information on Marston and his life. I did not know that his wife was a law school graduate and "career woman."
  12. Great Mads. I love those books. So well written and just perfect satire that still resonates.
  13. According the letter enclosed with the list, comics were sold as complete sets for sets 1-5. Gaines was going to keep 6-9 for himself, then the rest(10-12, if present) would be sold as individual issues. I think Gaines really felt pride in EC's comics. No other Editors saved so many copies. Gaines saved them for himself and his family, and for others as well. Could you imagine if Lloyd Jacquet, Vincent Sullivan, Martin Goodman or any of those guys saved 12 issues of their titles in perfect condition? Or did they? Maybe there is a pile of NM copies of Marvel Comics 1 lying around. I think a find like that would be great for the hobby. Not good for the few people holding onto high grade copies, but good for the rest of us and the hobby as a whole.
  14. That's a real piece of EC history. Is it just the master list, or is it the actual brochure that included the master list, but also contained the articles by Bob Overstreet, Russ Cochran, and the reprinted article from the CBG that first introduced the Gaines File copies? It contained all the above. Very interesting. The Cochran article (I believe from CBG) was reprinted in an Overstreet a few years ago.
  15. I just won this on ebay- master list of GFC's sent to interested parties prior to being put on the market. Of note, I am looking to buy a GFC for Shock 14...
  16. Scanners? The last comic con I went to, in NYC in the 80's, featured the movie "Scanners" and I got a movie poster. Never saw the movie, though.
  17. You should see if CGC would add that in the notes: First copy of Pep 23 to be officially recognized as 2nd appearance of Archie.
  18. Until now, the auction houses could advertise Jackpot 4 as "2nd Archie appearance, same month as pep 22" and advertise pep 23 as "2nd Archie appearance" also. No more double dipping into 2nd appearance of Archie pool.
  19. Wow. Great work on this MagicMasonry. You should get some kind of no-prize award for your keen detective work and persistence in proving a definitive answer to the question. Will you get your pep 23 placed in a new holder?
  20. I picked these up this past year. The AS 8 I bought from a boardie through a private sale. The WW 1 has a married page. My 12 y/o daughter is a WW fan. Or was. The last time I took her to our LCS she bought a Hulk TPB.
