  1. Book does present well. And, hey, it is a great book to have! I would say the grade is likely a 6.5 (fine +). As you noted, the foxing / dirt on the back cover is going to hurt the grade. There also appears to be a slight bend at the low right corner of the back cover but that might just be an illusion due to the foxing. On the front cover there is a small bend at the top left corner and what appears to be colour loss (or dirt) along the top (just above the "s" in comics). There also appears to be some colour loss along the bottom of the front cover. Based on all on of this, that is why I am thinking 6.5 (fine +). From what I have seen from pressing results, I think a press would help considerably with minimizing the ripple along the bottom of the book.
  2. Ha, ha. You may have more power and influence than you think! All joking aside, my take from your initial question was that the industry (Marvel, DC and perhaps the other content producers) have, unfortunately, appeared to be tone deaf to the plight of local shops. Maybe, just maybe, that will change and the flow of new product may be halted or slowed during this period of madness. Sorry to hear you have to close but, as others have said, it is for the best. And I am really sorry to hear you have decided (or likely will decide) to stop carrying new comics. I hope you wait until the New Warriors comes out, I am sure that title will save the industry Take care, and good luck!
  3. Book presents well. However, that is a lot of wear along the spine. The lower right front corner is pretty rough and there is a lot of wear along the front bottom as well. Those black ink spots on the back cover will likely detract from the grade. I would estimate the grade at a 3.0 (good / very good). Still a nice book from a great era!
  4. That is a beauty! Couple of observations. First, is that a stain just to the left below the logo on the front cover? Second, it looks like the bottom staple might be impacted a bit (this looks a little more evident on the back cover). Finally, the dirt on the back cover might detract a bit from the grade. Not sure if anyone really knows how CGC deals with ink transfer or whatever that blue line is along the back cover so I am going to be conservative and say the estimated grade would be 7.0 (fine / very fine). Closer examination is required but I tend to think that is a miscut along the top rather than a trim.
  5. That is a nice book. Corners are shape, back cover is clean and the book overall has nice gloss. The one concern I have is that apparent horizontal crease about a quarter way down the book. It looks like the crease is on the back as well, suggesting it goes through the whole book? I don't know much about pressing so I am not sure if a press would fit that horizontal crease or not. There is some evident stress at the staples and some minor spine ticks but I would estimate the grade at 7.0 (fine/very fine) to 7.5 (very fine).
  6. That's a cool poster. It's been a while but I seem to remember Ronin being a good read. It is underappreciated in my opinion.
  7. Hum, not sure. That is a good question. I don't press books but would be interested from those who do have expertise on this as to whether a press could cause the stain to worsen. The reason for suggesting a press was the vertical crease along the spine of the front cover. A press would likely make that go away.
  8. I think the image is too small (ha, ha, just kidding) No question this book has been well loved and enjoyed over the years. There is a lot going on: tears, bends, colour breaks, colour loss (on the back cover), and what appears to be some straining. Based on from what I can see (the top front cover appears to be cut off from the scan) I would say 2.5 (Good +). Still a nice find for a couple of bucks!
  9. The ad on the back has a Canadian address. I am in Canada and that is the same copy I have as well. If I recall correctly, it came with the purchase of paper towel rolls or something of that nature but it was a long time ago (41 years ago) so my memory may be faulty. And yes, I am old. I know, I know. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!
  10. Trump cover This is an example where I would love to have the book in hand to grade it. I want to say 6.0 (fine) but wonder if those close up photos of the spine embellish the spine wear?
  11. As rjpb noted, I don't think this would come back qualified due to the water stain. You're right, that interior cover is very nice. But both covers are nice, the corners are decent, there is not too much wear on the spine, no obvious tears. The stain is unfortunate, so I would grade this as a 5.0 (VG / F). Some are opposed to pressing but if you are open to it, I would suggest a press might help this book considerably.
  12. eBay name is the same as it was here. http://www.ebay.com/usr/copperagekids?_trksid=p2047675.l2559 Thank you!
  13. Never dealt with this former board member, he was a bit off putting as he came across a bit greedy. Now I want to make sure I never deal with this person. Could someone please private message me his ebay handle or, if it is okay to do so, post his ebay name here? Thanks!
  14. Decent copy but I doubt it would grade higher than a 5.0 and in fact, I am inclined to think 4.5 (very good +) as someone noted above. This is based on the following: first, there are a substantial number of spine ticks (which is not helped by being a black cover). Second, there appear to be two large "dings" along the top front cover (just above the "ma" in Marvel and between the "l and c" in Marvel Comics. There is also a small stain on the back cover and what appears to be a small tear on the left hand side of the back cover as well. Finally, the blunted lower right corner on the back cover will hurt the grade as well. Anyway, that would be reasoning for grading this a 4.5 or a 5.0. Still a nice reader copy.
  15. Nice looking book. I always struggle on how much of an impact shadowing will have on the grade but based on the photos you provided I would say this books is probably a 7.5 (very fine).
  16. Awesome! Nice thing about those sentimental books, doesn't matter if they go up or down in value, just nice to always have them in the collection!
  17. The book does appear to be structurally sound but in it's current condition I would say probably 1.8. However, if you get that pressed by someone who knows what they are doing, I would not be surprised if it came back a 3.0. This is a little off topic, but my spidey sense suggests ASM # 1 is gaining attention and will likely start going up in value.
  18. Never. I personally have been inspired to start the CLSA - Comic Label Spellcheck Authority. My tamper evident yellow smiley face sticker will 100% guarantee that your graded comic's label is free of any spelling errors. Punctuation check will cost extra though. Ahhhh, I was hoping for a grammatical error in your post. You know, something to drive home the value and importance of the CLSA. Something like: "when collecting comics, it's important to look a head."
  19. Odd that in all of that collection there was only a handful of actual comics. May I ask (if it is not too personal) how old was the person when he passed away? As others of noted, much of the collection does not look very old so I am curious if he was relatively young when he passed. Hope you're able to help the family.
  20. Nice! Just make sure you don't spell anyone's name wrong
  21. This is interesting. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=8304739#Post8304739 Guess this is actually old news. I am not on the boards everyday. Did not realize he had changed his board name.
