Book shipped today and I’m excited to say it got a 4.5!!

But it came back with a married cover :tonofbricks:

My home run book turned into a pop up out book in one quick minute.  Saw the 4.5 first and saw dollar signs and then read further. Makes me wonder if the guy knew since the book was itching to be slabbed and he sold it pretty cheap.

soooooo, you're sayin I was right

The screening was done by CCS, not CGC. I thought the screening fee gets waived if services for CCS are performed.  In this case they were not as the book was transferred to CGC for service. It's only 10 bucks or whatever but I just think you were way off base with your original pressing recommendations here. Books with subscription creases do not benefit from pressing. Thinking you could press them out and get an 8.0 does not show much experience on this topic. Anyway, it appears the OP thinks you are the hero here so we shall Let It Be.

I do understand your point. Here's my rebuttal :)  I never said subscription creases could be removed through pressing - obviously any crease which breaks color cant be removed from pressing - I just 1) couldnt tell from the photos if there were some areas or other defects on the book which could be removed and , 2) and in some areas you can't really tell (from the photos) if this crease breaks color or if it is just a bend (like on the bottom of the cover) and to me its worth sending a book of that value through a prescreen just to make sure - especially if its free. (i.e., color breaks caused by creasing, well ANY color break - OBVIOUSLY cant be removed from pressing - any nitwit can tell you that - sorry if it seemed I was implying that)

TO ME, 3) I would have cleaned and pressed the cover(s) and 4) any bends on interior pages because - if a crease goes down 100% of the cover, but it only breaks color in about 25% of the crease - I would still prefer to remove the BEND which resulted in the color break and then only have the color break. Also, if the bend transferred to the interior pages - even if slightly, it most likely did NOT cause color break internally and I would think their removal could also increase the grade. Call me crazy, but to me cleaning and pressing would enhance the eye appeal and I think, the grade (if the actual bend which caused the color breaking crease is no longer there, isn't it potentially a higher grade then the same copy WITH the crease?)

Lets be honest, the photos aren't the best in the world, but I DO see areas where I would think dry cleaning would make it look so much nicer (where some of these darker blotches would be removed. On most books, I would agree it wouldn't amount to anything - but this is a book which has a cover which is has a large percentage of white area - and is higher value, so any .5 increase in grade is worth the effort - and any eye appeal increase is ALSO worth the effort even if the grade isn't affected.

As to whether the current raw grade could INCREASE on a book which already has a subscription crease - thats debatable. Depends if there are other creases on the book which are substantial enough to drop the grade further.

Anyway, with all that being said, Danno if you feel I sent you down the wrong path, give me your paypal address and I will send you $10 if CCS charged you anything.

    Respectfully submitted,

    David

It's good to hear validation from CCS. Like I thought, this book was not a good candidate for pressing.  You only wasted the screening fee. It could have been worse. This obviously says the creases are color breaking and cannot be removed. Hopefully, CCS did not see something worse like restoration. With the creases, I think your book will be graded in the 4.5 to 5.0 range.

The screening fee is waived if he gets the book graded (assuming its worth over $3k)  thats in part why I suggested it - as he had nothing to lose?

Just heard back on the screening and they indicated that "the magazine did not require pressing services and will be held to transfer for grading." I guess that I expected more details but we should see soon enough.

  5. So heres a story for you all...

I grew up in Old Town, Maine...and lived there from about 1966 to 1985... then moved to New York..

A few years ago I purchased a collection on Long Island in New York which had this written on the cover.

"Kathy Ann Thibodeau, 13 Davis Street, Old Town, ME"

Not only was she from my home town - but she lived literally 7 houses away from me! I tried to find her on FB at the time but was not successful.

I would love to know the chain of ownership of that book and how it ended up in NY

so they said they dont do cleaning? It looked to me from the pics (which were kinda poor I know..from the ebay listing)  like some dry cleaning was in order...but I guess they would have told you that

I sent the magazine off to get graded on Saturday, paying roughly $150 for grading.  Did I fail to take advantage of any obvious opportunity to improve the grade?  What would be you advise at this point.  CGC is scheduled to receive the book on Wednesday.  An 8.0 would be awesome!

I would advise calling them right away before they grade it, etc.. and having them run it through CCS first for their screening service " CCS offers a Screening service to determine whether your comic book is a suitable candidate for pressing, restoration or restoration removal. The screening fee is 1% of the fair market value ($10 minimum) of the comic at the time of screening.

For comic books submitted through the WalkThru tier (valued over $3,000), the 1% screening fee will be waived if a service is performed. If no service is deemed suitable for the comic, the maximum fee charged will be $50. If service is deemed suitable but you decide not to have the work done, the full screening fee will be charged. "

So maybe you in the "fee is waived" category - and I'm saying all this assuming they DO work on Playboys...which I think they must.

Maybe Matt can work some magic on it

  8. I'm sitting here going through a collection I just picked up and there is the signature by some kid on many of them who is probably the original owner of the book - in this case one "Robert Milder", who I think lived in Canada as that is where this collection is from. I always imagine them thinking "I wonder whatever happened to the comic collection my mother threw away or gave away."

Anyway, I thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to finding these people so we can say " Hey, I found one of your comics." - but more importantly, so we can say "soooo...do you have any more?

I thought a thread dedicated to this endeavor might be kind of cool (or, it might fail miserably and get buried :roflmao:)

I have those, and my books are pretty ugly, so they might stand out...but good luck finding them if they're just floating around out there in another state.

This is exactly why I started stolencomic.com - and I plan to expand its capabilities. (I had a fantastic four #48 or 49 stolen from me about 10 years ago - and it got me thinking)
