Joined eBay about 2003, mainly to try and get back into collecting a Spider-man run. I remember a haul of like 400 books from about #101 to #500 with all keys there for $600 Cdn. Crazy. I eventually got the whole run completed, thanks eBay for the head start!
I remember the ASM#1 around same time for $1999 Cdn, it graded to an o/w 6.5 - still have it. I also remember an AF#15 that I got for about $4K Cdn and another for $3K, and they ended up grading as a 3.0 and 2.5 tan to o/w and o/w to w respectively -- sold the 3.0 three months ago for a lot more....still have the 2.5.
When I started into GA soon after this, it was a LCS and Metro that I turned to only ........... can't remember why I wouldn't have stuck with eBay, but might have had something to do with the one time I was fleeced for $1500 by an eBay crook for some book, stupidly sent a bank transfer and was ghosted immediately afterwards.
Any one out there with other early eBay horror stories of stupidity ?

Then you will enjoy the John Peel Wiki.
Let's say you're looking for available shows and track listings for 1982. Then you take a fancy to checking the 4th May Show. Then you see the full show is available. Click on the relevant Mooo link - 2 hours 5 minutes long (3) and enter: User Name: peel Password: group
And as if by magic, you will have access to that show plus many others available on the Mooo server. There are other file archives available via the Wiki, I only mention that one because it's particularly good.
Many of my own show recordings are available through the Wiki. Have a look around!
I will ... thank you so much !!

Very true. People have collected records a lot longer than comics. Music has always been one of the most important things in my life. I was raised in a house with blues, jazz and rock a billy music playing. First time I heard The Rolling Stones, I was hooked.
Since you like music and collecting, you gotta pick up a copy of this book. I guarantee, you won’t be able to put it down until you are finished.
read this (ibook) 6 months ago based on a recommendation here (probably you R-Man!), it is incredible !! I own several dozen 78's, but the ones talked about in this book are off-the-chart insane !!

I'd venture to say that the more you do not touch, use, play with an item, the more you are a collector of said item

Hey Congrats !!! If that's the price on GPA, then it is a total steal for a 5.0 !!!! so there is some interior tape, it is OW-White! And just a few days ago, another 5.0 apparently sold for $100K .......... I have a 5.0 ow/w with no marvel chipping and no tape, and I would want closer to 100K then closer to 40K for it if I were to sell (and I would never sell)

Can't remember an exact book, but certainly it would have either been ROM#1 or an ASM from that era (around issue#175-180) ...... I would have been about 11 years old

Gocollect algorithm... tries to predict values as best they can. Uses CGC and CBCS sales info? Whereas GPA CGC reported sales only? I like to use both sites, as well as eBay, and threads here on the boards.
using multiple sources is absolutely ESSENTIAL to get a handle on values

Not really off topic, at least in my case.
Although not returning to Camelot this year, were I going this knightly square table would be high on my list!

Alas, your's truly isn't among these iPad daguerrotypes as one of those recording events for posterity!

I call these sales car-crashes . Someone shockingly overpays for some varied reasons a) they don't like eBay where you could have easily purchased a much nicer looking 4.5 copy cheaper at that time and still can b) they are flush with bitcoin money and just like spending it uninformed and wildly c) a bit of a & b plus the winner is naïve. or maybe d) shill bidders working in conjunction if not conspiracy. To quote these very odd sales as anything other than anomalies and to infer or think they are the trend or a precedent of things to come is IMO a disservice to the community, very wrong and just a total misperception of the comic key marketplace. Solid intuition is the partial key to success in this hobby along with a realistic historical sense that if you buy something hot based upon a freak sale(s) - you better be prepared for it to go cold down the road. My 2 cents.
yup ....put in time and get educated , then it's tough to either pay too much if buying or accept too little if selling

I have a question about Superman #4. On the cover it shows Superman wrecking a building or tearing down columns or something like that. Did anything remotely close to that happen in the story?

They usually add the 15% onto the reported sale price after the auction. I’m not totally sure but it looks like 500k +15% = 575k is what happened.
that's what I would have thought, but their sight indicates the $575 is before the 15% ...... but it could be an error ......

No I think that's a fair assessment. It's just the 9.4 could only barely break $400K at auction, and only sold with a bidder throwing in a post auction offer to get to the eventual sale price over $500K. This 8.5 has been trimmed, and I agree with @Funny Books that should solidly affect this potential sale, well one would think since trimming is usually a death sentence. I could just as easily see it doing what you're thinking, but my gut tells me closer to the $200K-$250K mark.
Firstly, the $575 sale is before 15% buyers fee added - so it's like a $660 sale. With restored keys, the difference between 9.4 and 8.5 (given all else the same) is not that much price wise. The 8.5 is an A3 (more desirable than an A5), but the trimming will subsequently bring it down. Sooooo, at the end of the day, my guess would be around 400K minimum. If it wasn't trimmed, I could easily see it up there with the 9.4 sale.
