  1. some have "mid c" only. Thanks BP. I had seen that listed also - were both the recognized written name and mid-c markings only on the covers? And anyone know the time frames for the collection?
  2. Overproduced? Aren't the print runs today far less than they were in the Golden and Silver Ages? Or maybe you mean in relation to demand... Maybe it should be called the Age of Speculation (much like the baseball card bubble in the 1990s). I'll be honest, I haven't bought a new comic since the mid to late 1980s as even then I thought they were too expensive and I wanted to focus on GA and SA books. My assumption was that then as today, for 99% of the books will have surplus supply over demand in my lifetime. So some obvious facetiousness in my post but some presumed reality as well plus my total apathy for this era and somewhat for age naming in general. I like George's comment above about calling them by decade. So many discussions of identifying when a certain age starts because of one book or some thing or another. Sure it's fun to discuss but in the end I buy books based on my interests and this or most the "Copper Age" and beyond hold no interest for me, so somewhat inappropriate for me to offer my thoughts.
  3. Apologies for the bump of this but better than starting anew. Quickie question - do all of the Recil Macon's have his name written on them? He never used an RM stamp did he? I don't think an initial stamp was used but was curious. And what are the date ranges for the collection? Thanks
  4. Now that we've got Bradly here with us, I have a question to ask with respect to clipped coupons. Are GA books with a clipped coupon out that affects the storyline simply given a Blue Universal grade of 0.5 for Incomplete or can they also be given a Green Qualified label denoting the actual grade of the book? If there is a choice, is it up to the submittor of the book or is it at the discretion of CGC as to the type of label to be used? Any book (regardless of year) that is missing an entire page (or more) will be a 0.5, unless it is Qualified. A book that has a coupon (or some portion of a page) clipped/cut out is a serious defect, but could still be in the G/VG to VG- range depending on the size of the portion missing, and of course the condition of the book otherwise. CGC will usually Qualify such a book if it is otherwise above the G/VG range. A book that would normally be Qualified by CGC can be given a lower Blue Universal label, if the submitter specifically requests it. In either case, the defect in question will still be noted on the label, either in all caps if it is Qualified, or lower case if it is factored into the grade for a Blue Universal label. Also in either instance, the label will state "INCOMPLETE" in all caps. Bradley; Greatly appreciate your response to my enquiry here. Was asking since I have a HG Larson copy of a semi-key GA DC and wondering how it would be labelled if sent in for grading. A Qualified grade with the actual grade would seem to make a lot more sense and more informative to a potential buyer than an artificially lower grade, since the defect in question (i.e. clipped coupon) would be noted on the label in either case. At least that's my thinking here. I have said before that I would like to see both grades on the label. My preference would be to show the lower blue label grade as the visible grade but the higher qualified grade showing similar to a double cover grade with the qualifying defect(s) noted. That provides the most information and no decision to be made by either CGC as to what label or the submitter as they don't know what grades would be imposed for either a blue or green grade. Just my thoughts, likely worth less than
  5. Worthless Age? Overpriced Age? Overproduced Age?
  6. Thanks again, folks. Not a PCH expert so I had no clue. Just from the periphery and looking at census numbers being comparable and nothing special such as label notes or anything else noteworthy, I was at a loss as to why it demanded such a premium. I am always humbled by the expertise and willingness to share that knowledge here - just another reason that makes the GA forum the best place to hang out.
  7. That is a neat book, BP. Gene Fawcette really deserves a lot more credit - heck of an artist.
  8. First, great story, Richard and beautiful book. You and I are pretty much the same age and I started collecting in the early 70s. No way my dad would have ponied up for that book - I had a hard enough time getting me to buy a 20 or 25 cent comic. I used to pick up soda bottles and return them to the grocery store to get my comic spending money. My mom was a little more supportive, she let me buy my first SA book - Avengers #19 for a few dollars. Nothing spectacular condition wise but Avengers was my favorite title and to get a 12 center with that PopArt logo was heavenly - and yes I still have that book.
  9. To more not quite as graphic Schomburg flesh-burning...
  10. That seems like a heck of deal, RE. If I had room to put these and a few extra bucks, I'd sure be more than tempted.
  11. So that's what happened to Randolph Scott - he started doing creepy dude comic book covers. Is it too late to tell the Statler Brothers? ...for those remember the reference
  12. That just seems like such a jump from the issues around it with comparable census numbers and the recorded is higher. Also Gary's listings don't tend to be overly exorbitant so it made me curious. Still quite a premium to me but supply and demand will rule out. Thanks
  13. Is there anything special about This Magazine is Haunted #3? I saw a listing from Gary Dolgoff on Ebay for a CGC 2.5 with a starting bid of $1,100. It is here - http://www.ebay.com/itm/This-Magazine-is-Haunted-3-CGC-2-5-OW-W-p-Vampire-cover-story-1952-c-08168-/361891459386?hash=item544269713a:g:pGkAAOSwSv1Xkml5 Looking at GPA shows only one sale in Nov. 2016 of a 2.0 for $527. Seven total blue labels on the census which is the same count as #4 as a comparison. The #3 has a 9.0 as the top graded. I googled but couldn't find anything that stood out. Does it just not come up for sale or is there something special as nothing is listed on the label denoting anything. Thanks
  14. From a female jerk to a male jerk, soda that is...
  15. Some peds like Crippens and Crowleys don't get much love. The Crippen PQ and often sun/dust shadowed cover and the Crowley stamp on many covers aren't overly attractive which seem to keep the prices at much less if any premium. Bottom feeder that I am, no doubt, that's why I have more of those
  16. If you're old, then I am prehistoric (which many days, my body aches and creaks seem to confirm)
  17. We all just live in the yellow submarine and Cal is its captain.
  18. Wasn't this part of Cal's platform to run CGC and clean up the boards
  19. That cover is just wrong Glad he didn't use as much creativity on Marvel Comics #1 - assuming it is Frank Paul on the Amazing Stories.
  20. Brain under domed glass to Sixth Sense under domed glass
  21. Stan and Jack missed a great marketing opportunity - a Mister Fantastic bean bag or inflatable chair. Remember the inflatable pillows.
  22. One of favorite all-time covers so please allow me to double-up on it, albeit not as nice of a copy as Jack's...
