Who belongs in the SA Artists Survivor Series list?

99 posts in this topic

Can we put a definite time period on this contest? 1954 - 1968? 1970? What exactly are we talking about? That my help figuring out who should be included.

I always consider the BA to start when Kirby started at DC in 1970.

Harry Lucey NO - DeCarlo is enough for all eight Archie fans we have here

Quality is not necessarily measured in numbers :sumo:

I nominated DeCarlo for his Atlas work not his Archie work which was far inferior to Lucey's.

why you would put Shelton, Kremer, Drucker and Fox in, I dunno. they're all getting booted in rounds one or two, and thus only extend the contest length needlessly

As was shown in the GA thread, the point of these "contests" is not necessarily to decide who the "best" artist was, but to expose people to a lot of artists' work that they might not have otherwise seen.

Aparo's first work was in '66 with Charlton & BWS first work was in '67 or '68 on DD. So technically they did draw during the SA, albeit late in the SA (like Wrightson, et al).

Neal Adams first work was in the early sixties in Archie Jokebook.

You can add Marie Severin to the list.

Yeah, I thought about about adding her name but passed. Kinda like I did with Herb Trimpe & Sal Buscema. Nothing against them, but I didn't want the list to get too long. I asked this question in the GA Survivor thread: Do Adams & Buscema belong on the SA list?

Adams best body of work was bronze, but he did have a late silver age presence.

All these series were done before 70 I believe

Strange adventures, xmen,Avengers(?) and a ton of covers.

I included Crumb & Wilson. If I was to include another undeground artist it would be Spain Rodriguez. I think those three were the best of that era.

This is just a preliminary list. I want feedback as to who I may have missed or people feel don't belong (eg Neal Adams). I'm definitely going to pare down the list. I just threw some names up there to spark debate (BWS, for example).

Here's 27 and I would add 3 to round it out. Granted, I'm not running it, but some of these names are way too obscure. I took out the artist's whose heyday was the Golden Age and are just footnotes in the SA. Frazetta is great, but I don't consider him a SA artist. Barry Windsor Smith is great but I consider him a BA artist since his best work was then. Even this list could be easily narrowed down. I love JLA but not Sekowsky's very bland work. Ross Andru? Nothing too special there.

Ah well, this is just my input. Take it for what it's worth. lol

1.) I would include Neal Adams. A strong case could be made for moving him to a BA list, but I bought a lot of 12-cent DC superhero books in the 60's that had memorable Adams covers, plus he drew the Spectre, Deadman, and a couple of World's Finest's. He might be late Silver Age, but I think he fits.

2.) Somebody else said "Mort Drucker -Who Cares?"...well, I do. Besides a handful of stories he drew for the DC war books, he did tons of work in Mad magazine in the 60's.

3.) If you're going to include inkers, don't forget Ayers.

Good list, in fact it almost resembles my original one. How do you feel about Wrightson when his first work appeared in '69. That's one of the names that I wanted to hear other's opinions about.
