For sure! Just seems like #22 in particular has eluded me for years, as compared to the surrounding issues. The two VGish copies posted look great with nice vibrant colors. The ones I see making the rounds usually have lackluster colors, or heavy stains & corner chips etc.

20 & 21 as well. Both of mine are lowly 2.5s. Highest for those are 7.0 and 6.5 - so definitely a tough series. Never realized this.

Generally, if you're changing an attribution on the GCD, you need to put a reason in the comments, even if they're only visible when you look at the change logs.  The one time I had to go in and undo a change, I made very sure I was able to quote Doc Vassillio (sp?) and JVJ as to the correct artist.

On another note, I still miss JVJ.  He was such a generous man with his enormous knowledge and skill at artist spotting.

The old GCD note regarding Delich and Black is currently found on the ComicBookPlus site, where they state that they use GCD info, but apparently have not kept up with GCD updates.

At ComicBookPlus, the credits for their scan of Zoot Comics 14(a) show nothing by Baker, with the note CBP quoted from GCD, ""Artist revision from Matt Baker to ? by Craig Delich 2013-4-21. Bill Black confirms art is not by Baker."

If everyone here hasn't seen Zoot 14(a), take a look at ComicBookPlus. Who thinks the cover and art really look like Baker?

Got this from Dale Roberts 8 years ago. He most likely was correct when he said it was a 4.0.

Rick.  Quite the collection.  I believe the Cinderella Love 25 slabbed out at 7.5.  Not the one that sold for 60K though.

Attributing comic book art to Matt Baker is tough because there are just too many sources and experts with conflicting views. His style is pretty recognizable (or is it?), but the lack of detailed records, combined with the collaborative nature of the industry back then, makes it hard to pin down what’s definitively his. Everyone seems to have their own take, and without clear documentation, it’s really tricky to get consensus. You almost have to accept that there’s always going to be some debate when it comes to Baker’s work…

 

How do we solve this?

1. Original Source Docs: Dig into publisher records for proof of Baker’s work.

2. AI: Use AI to analyze Baker’s style and compare it to disputed pieces.

3. Social Media: Collect insights from online collectors - in progress  

With these steps, we can build a comprehensive registry supported by experts. To get auction houses like HA and CGC on board, we need solid, research to support direct attributions, like with Exotic Romances #31, where HA currently lists it as “MB art.”

We’re talking about a dozen or so books….

perhaps any issue/book with a conflicting attribution you can use a tiered "ranking".  Take that last issue posted Love Confessions 54; few believe it is NOT Baker, but most believe it is.  Put a single question mark after that title.  A book (not sure which one to pick) that the majority believe is NOT by Baker, but perhaps one of two hold-outs believe IS - put three question marks after that title.  Make sense?  Good idea/bad idea?

Ultimately Bakers are in the eye of the beholder ..I think some rating for questionable books would be helpful ..

but the question is can you quantify that ?

Or just notate the differing source/opinions . I don’t  think ai is up to it..

and even “experts” can differ on some of  his books due to the touch up work he did  and aping of his work

That will be the question when adding it to a registry set.  It'll have to be verified somehow in order to be added.  You can always start up the set with what had been offered above and then add / remove other books as you get clarification on others.  I just noticed an issue that had squeaked into a set by accident and had it removed.     If nothing else it helps keep this as clean as possible.

So I’ve never done a registry set is it by title or artist or both ?
