Are there any keys here?

Maybe then it's either the start of indy comics, or dazzler #1, the start of direct market. the other books seem like less of 'events' and more of just calling out cool books from around the time.

so go ahead- add Dazzler #1 as a key Copper book! It's just like Showcase #4!

No, I think that elevating Miller and Byrne for full writing/art duties signifies a major shift in the ideology at Marvel and the real beginning of the comic book as rock star movement that took off in the 80's.

And Days of Future Past is notable for being Claremont and Byrne's swan song, after Byrne was ticked at Shooter for killing off Phoenix, and it not only signified the end of that tandem, but was also the lynch pin for a decade's more X-tales.

But I do agree that the start of the Indies and the rise of the DM are more elemental.

alright hen, if you are talking the start of the rise of the independent publishers and distribution, that might be Nexus #1 from Capitol Comics, which was the incentive for Pacific Comics to start publishing comics as well.

This way we can combine distribution (Dazzler) and Indy comics into 1 book. I kind of like the idea of Nexus 1 being a key in that way, cause it's a rockin' book, still in some demand, hard to find, and even harder in high grade.

nope. it was oversized, though, like TMNT 1-4. Are those considered magazines?

Good question - are TMNT the *exact* dimensions of Nexus or smaller?

I still say Pacific offered the first line of independent comics, by King Kirby no less, and this means a lot more than a short-run of B&W magazine-size books.

I think Nexus is magazine sized... larger (or rather, wider) than TMNT's odd dimensions.

That's the 1981 magazine. The 1983 comic series was smaller.

what determines if something is a magazine or not, anyway?

If it's magazine-sized. Once you reach those dimensions, it's no longer an off-sized comic book.

not to be dense, but what dimension is that? Is it set in stone someplace?

I just checked comics.org and it lists Nexus as "B&W magazine format", while TMNT is listed as "standard B&W".

And does it really matter, if TMNT is deemed "magazine sized" it's the still the Turtle's first appearance, and doesn't change the magazine dimensions or format of Nexus.

What about Marvel Fanfare #1 from March 1982?

It was a HUGE title and very innovative for the time, new format, better paper, ad-free, creator bonuses, extremely high initial sales, etc.
