and was meant to allude to how much sexual prowess Bond has...

Thank you! acclaim.gif

When I said "sexual" prowess, I was specifically not thinking of "masturbatory" prowess...so that rules you out, CORNHOLIO! 893naughty-thumb.gif

I actually wrote a long market report that I was going to post here... but my computer clicked off and I lost it... so I'll just start at the point concerning this thread... Anyway, everything I would have said is contained in DAM's post in the Big Apple video thread.

This weekend I was at the Big Apple con all day Saturday and almost all day Sunday... basically I was working the ACTOR table all day Saturday and a little on Sunday and that experience gave me a whole new appreciation for the dealers.

I totally agree: VF and lower books should be discounted (on the whole) not priced over guide... why? because there's no such thing as a RARE (again, for the most part) silver/bronze age book in that grade... you can find most books you're looking for. MotorCity is an overpriced dealer for the most part... but I think the solution is simple, don't buy from them. I like to kavetch about the dealers as much as the next guy... but to be fair, I just have to say it must be tough to be standing there all day, and just get lowballed all day long, or yelled at because "we" don't think the prices are low enough. Yeah, I know, the dealers aren't moving mountains or performing surgery... but it is hard work. So, yes, I could argue with the dealers I think are overpriced (Harley, Motorcity, Jamie Graham, Rogovin, etc.) but... musn't it get tiring as person after person comes at you complaining about the prices... constantly... after standing and working in the "luxury accomodations"? I'm not saying we should all get together and feel sorry for these guys, it's a job like any other, but I think dealers take more public abuse (in this forum and then at the shows) than other ordinary lines of work. Are some dealers jerks? sure. Are some dishonest? sure (richie muchin and others). For me, I'll still call out the dishonest and jerks, but bad pricing... not so much. The solution is just not to bother with them for me. The thing is... to me MotorCity and Harley have to be doing SOMETHING right... I have some theories on their success... but ultimately, they don't feel the need to budge on their prices... the solution, buy the product elsewhere. It's sure available.

Support the guys you like and like their books... bob, ted, thomas of Zen comics, Joe of JC comics, Ben of Zapp... etc. (my faves of dealers) if you like these guys, like their product support them and forget about just complaining about guys you don't really ever want to buy from. And look, I could nitpick flaws about the guys I like... but the fact is, I overlook it because then I would never buy from anyone... ever.

As for the forum dinner... it was great! Great meeting shadroch (great guy!), HooDeeDo (although I didn't get a chance to chat til Sunday) another great guy, rube11 (not at the dinner, but the guy was super friendly) and the rocketeer (another friendly guy). As always, Steve Borock and Paul Litch were fantastic and just great to myself and everyone. Really enjoyed meeting and talking to them again. These guys love comics! I always enjoy learning from all the guys on the forum, dealers and others included, and it's a fascinating experience.

Thanks to everyone (especially DAM) for making this a great con experience!

Think of all the directions you could have gone there - the helmet he bought was even PURPLE, for christsake's...

"Hey Rudd, too bad the only purple helmet you have is the one you bought" etc etc etc

Actually the helmet is red...but either way...the direction you've decided to go with this visual imagery has shut me right up, because if you're alluding to what I think you're alluding to and you think the color purple is normal...apparently labelling Bonds as the one with the masturbatory prowess was a bit premature. ooo.gif

So is this the holy trinity of power objects on the CGC boards ??

1) Jamie's Magneto Helmet

2) Scottish' Porno tie

3) Greggy's Short shorts....

Imagine the havoc one could do if he possessed all three... 893whatthe.gif

Yes I have, especially when I dropped from $75 to $60 and they say $50.

Right, but at least you were willing to do a little something to begin with, Mark couldn't even get a measly $10 discount on three wholly mediocre books. I guess it doesn't really matter, as both you and Motor City have remained in business for years, so you must be doing something right. thumbsup2.gif

As a collector, I just like to buy nice comics at a good price. I do not consider it my job to support anybody's particular business model, so don't come crying to me about your expense for this, how much you payed for that, etc. You're the one running the business, that's your problem. My only concern is books in your stock and how much I'll have to pay to get them.

If you have a book at 1.5x guide and I don't think it's worth it, I don't need to know or care about your purchasing snafus, and no amount of argument is going to make me say "Gosh, I guess I will pay 1.5x guide then!" It just sounds like whining.

On the occasion that I have sold books, mostly on Ebay, I have taken a loss on books for which I overpaid (albeit inadvertently). It happens, suck it up. I list these items along with ones for which the profit margin is much higher. In the aggregate I make money.

If I was a dealer travelling to shows, I would not haul along material that has not been selling, at least not without marking it down. Most dealers have tons of stuff they could make money on and a limited amount of stuff they can bring, so why waste your own or anyone else's time?

There is a basic economic principle at work here: If you have an item priced at X, and no one offers X for it, you drag it around to all the major shows and get no takers at X, have it on your website and in your catalog still without a sale at X, put it up on Ebay at X and garner not a single bid, give it up. The market value of the item is clearly not X.

There are a number of dealers large and small, we have all encountered them, that exhibit some bizarre form of what they no doubt consider to be independence by steadfastly refusing to base their prices (sometimes their grading) on simple market reality.

THAT'S what I was trying to say!
