What Was The Most Expensive Comic You've Ever Touched?

95 posts in this topic

And what was going through your mind when you had that book in your hands?

For me, it was an Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 9.0 that Harley Yee had. He just had it out front on a table with some other not so expensive stuff like a CGC Daredevil 180.

I picked that Hulk 1 up and I literally felt tingly all over. I'm guessing that book is worth about $20,000? I don't even know. I thought about asking him "how much for this one" just for the hel of it but then he'd probably put it on his wall. So instead I just stared at that book for a good 2 minutes I think.

It reminded me of when I shared an elevator with Jessica Alba once. I was thinking "Wow, this could be the most beautiful girl I'll ever see," and I was thinking about how that Hulk was the nicest book I'd ever see and touch.

How about you? Any of you ever held a Tec 27, Action 1 or other super grail and what were you thinking when you had it in your hands?

I got to hold an Action 1 that belonged to my friend's dad when I was like 11.

It was a pretty book with great color. Perhaps in the F/VF range.

:applause:

Very recently I bought a More Fun #52 from Gary Stephens. It is a nice 5.5 OW Pages. He also had/has a complete run of Action 1 - 10.. The Action #1 was a solid 7.5 OW/White pages 100% Original, Un Restored. A few of the other Action Book's were restored with minor color touch. I went to his place for the MF #52 Only. That's when he brought out the other books.

It does make a person very nervous and a bit shakey handed. But it was Awesome!!!! You have to realize that these book's are not slabbed. Every single book is raw. My More Fun 52 WILL NOT be slabbed either. It was checked out prior to my offer for any restoration.

So in order of being nervous and very careful.... The Action #1 :o and the More Fun #52 :cloud9::cloud9:

That's why I'm so broke now.... I have entered the installment plan on some book purchases now for the first time in my life... What a way to go..

I got to hold onto a 7.0 Blue Label Amazing Fantasy 15 (thanks to Jim/CGCWorld)...which was also the first AF 15 I ever held. I was also about 1" away from both an Action 1 and Tec 27 at Geppi's Comic Museum--thogh I'm not sure if that counts.

in terms of having touched (well touched the mylar anyway ;) ), I guess aardvark88's tec 27 beater. In terms of having seen at the tiny local cons, the LCS owner had a nice Marvel 1 back in the early 90s that he brought to a show. In terms of having seen period, pretty much all the keys, along with anyone who's ever been to san diego..

I am trying to think about this one. I have never seen any holy grails for comics. I did go a to a swap meet one time and a guy was selling some old baseball comics for a couple hundred a piece, but they could of been restored. I have been in a comic shop and seen an ASM #28 which seemed it would grade at 4.0.

As far as CGC comics. The highest priced graded comic I have ever touched was the Captain America 110 I had it was graded at 8.0. Sold it for $75. I also one time saw a 3.0 Action 130 at a swap meet before. I also still have an Avengers 32 graded at 9.0, but I think my Captain America was probably more valuable.

I had to scan Centaurman's restored Action 1. It was nerve-wracking.

 I'd be petrified...

He wanted me to just take it and bring it back whenever. I said no way. The comic was worth more than the car I was driving.

Redbeard pulled out a very nice - probably VF/NM Superman #1 years back I held when we visited his office. He had an Action 1 but that one was all look and no touch.

Most valuable to read - a VF Tec 28 I used to own.

Great story TFL. I know exactly what you mean. My hands were shaking a little when I held that Hulk #1. I've held some nice raw keys before like a Batman 5. I felt this rush of excitement but at the same time, I tried to be so careful holding it because it would've taken me a few years paychecks to buy that book if I dropped it. Thanks to John (the System of a Down guy at the LA convention) for letting me hold that Bats 5. Some other dealers just look at me and think I'm a broke college kid and won't let me touch their super keys.

I've seen the major keys in person, Action 1 Tec 27, etc. When I was told I could pick them up I politely said no thanks. While I am confident nothing would happen, I've handled comics/ antiques for over 20 years, there is always that accident that could happen. I go into a store /con with the idea do not touch unless I intend to buy.

I feel you on that one. If a dealer treats me like I'm not a customer because I'm young looking(25), well, I won't be his customer regardless of the books he has. One guy would'nt even let me hold(in bag) his ASM #6 mid grade at WW Chicago because he thought I was'nt a serious buyer. Well, later at that same con I bought a better copy of that same book from someone else. On my way out the door I showed him my ASM# 3 and 6, firmly placing my balls in his mouth.
