question for those of you that don't read moderns?

74 posts in this topic

i’m curious,

if you like vintage comics, you like comic art, you like the art of sequential story telling.

then why don’t you read moderns?

is it the price? is it the art or story telling?

i know or i should say i feel that D.C. and Marvel put out some pretty craapy books for the most part.

but there are some gems mixed in between the million Civil War and Crisis “event” books.

but even better yet are the “independents” that put out some crazy good stuff like:

Walking Dead, Proof, Y the last Man, Locke and Key, Criminal, Wasteland, Invincible, etc. etc.

anyways i’m just wondering, not accusing anyone of anything :gossip: we all know how sensitive people can be on these boards.

Biggest factor for me is the jettisoning of continuity. I understand that some find it burdensome to try to maintain 40+ years of continuity, but I liked it.

Price increases is also a factor for me.

EDIT - I like some independent stuff such as Walking Dead. DC's Y the Last Man was excellent as well.

I swore them off recently and it was a GREAT decision. The storytelling put me off. I feel most of the characters I loved are ruined. Spider-Man especially. And I LOVE Spider-Man.

Now that I don't buy moderns I have more money for stuff I actually like.

I didn't read moderns for a very long time. The reason was that I was only interested in the comics from my youth, and money I was spending on moderns could better be used on books I would rather have in my collection.

Right now, I'm reading Walking Dead and House of Mystery. There are a few others that I would probably enjoy, but I'm not interested in spending the money on them. The two I read are plenty for me.

yeah the are way to expensive. but i have started only reading trades and i buy them form online sources so you can get them for pretty cheap.

for the longest time i only collected vintage books then i needed a comic fix one day and had read somewhere that Infinite Crisis was such a great book so i picked it up and was pretty disappointed. then i read somewhere that Walking Dead was really good so grabbed the first trade and couldn't believe it. probably the first comic book i have ever truly enjoyed reading. that book pretty much lead me to all the other ones i mentioned above.

some of them are so good it make you proud to be a comic collector. :cloud9:

what i mean is it actually made me think in the way a good book would.

i'm not comparing it to a great novel. totally different. but as a fan if comic art and sequential story telling i thought it was great.

I collect for nostalgia, pure and simple, and other than the odd TPB I borrow, I see absolutely no reason to buy or even read most Moderns. I purchase more Marvel Essentials and other reprints than I would ever buy Moderns.

I had a great childhood and comics were part of that, and it helps me recapture some of those feelings by reading through an old issue, collecting it, and leafing through covers. I left "new comics" a long time ago, and now get my entertainment from novels and some higher-brow movies.

The only thing buying Moderns would have me feeling is totally foolish to be laying down $4 a shot for this POS crepe.

That's cool, I was just feigning surprise and alarm that you hadn't enjoyed any other comic up to that point!

Price (aka value - Pay $2.99 at store, get home with 25 cent book I will finish in 15 minutes).

Continuity. The inevitable gaps mean that there are a ton of back stories that have happened from the time I was familiar with the books until now.

Options. With all the available reprints, I can choose from 80 years of comics for what I want to spend my time reading. Currently, I am reading all the EC comics. I was able to buy the reprints for about a quarter a piece and very little today can hold a candle to the story/art mix.

There are a couple of reasons:

First, I collect for nostalgia purposes and there isn't any of this present with modern books. Second, I'm less familiar with the artists and storylines whereas with vintage books, I know exactly what I'm getting (and this is a good thing). Third, I'd lie if I said value doesn't factor in to my decision to purchase at least some of my books to some extent. After all, I do collect key issues in addition to the handful of titles I'm working on.

That doesn't mean there aren't a few moderns in my collection. I'm particularly thrilled with Batman "Hush" storyline. One of the top story arcs to date, amazing artwork and great to read. Granted, Jim Lee is a familiar artist, but still. I'm more open to tpbs for modern comics. I don't have to invest as much in them, and can try out the title versus working it through the collecting route if that makes sense?

I used to read moderns and my favorite was Y: The Last Man. I also used to buy a lot of the Ultimate books like USM, UXM and UFF. Y was brilliant and I still love re-reading that series, but those Ultimate books... not so much. I re-read some of those Ultimate books and I realized that they're just not very good. The Bendis style infected most of those Ultimate books and there was too much talking, not enough action, like a bad porno movie. Plus, marvel increased their prices from $2.25 to $2.99 (why???) and that made me feel like those books were even more not worth the cover price.

I still buy Marvel and DC books (I especially like the Vertigo stuff) but I wait til there's a show in my area and buy those books for 50 cents or sometimes 25 cents. Why pay cover price for moderns when you can wait a month or two and get them for 50 cents each? Most of those books are going into the bargain bin anyway.

So for me, it was the bad quality of most moderns and the price. I used to spend about $100 a month on moderns, but now I use that all on Bronze Age books and whatever keys I can afford. I get alot more enjoyment out of those 70s books because I like the artwork more and to me, those older stories were just more fun. So I'd rather spend $20 on a mid grade ASM 120 where Spidey fights the Hulk than spend $2.25 on Ultimate Spider-Man 45 where the whole issue was about Aunt May talking to her therapist.

I buy Goon, although I need to read a bunch I have bought, put away to read, but never got to. I had been reading Conan for a while but dropped it.

I buy plenty of moderns --- out of the overstock box. I have not been so good about reading them though. I tell myself I will and then don't have the time.

But really, it's the cost of buying off the rack that stops me from really following moderns, plus these huge cross-over events are ridiculous. I can buy some cool vintage material for $3, so I'd rather do that.

I haven't found comics, as a medium, entertaining since I was a kid. Superhero comics are the same old, same old, and the other stuff doesn't really interest me. As a story-telling medium it's very limited; I prefer film, from an intellectual standpoint, and as an immersing experience. And when I really want to unwind, video games, booze and my girlfriends are much more interesting to me, and take up my disposable cash. Strippers aren't bad too.

I have ASM pulled for me every month for the purposes of having a complete set, but I haven't taken one out of its bag and board for years. And I'm really irritated by the fact that I now have to pick up 3 a month. It's not expensive, but it's cluttering up my place.

Then all you need to do is take a DS to the strip club, and you're set.
