Swine Flu and San Diego ??

79 posts in this topic

Just wondering about these kind of things.....these horrible diseases and how they spread and if anyone here has any medical experience or knowledge about if and when this thing can be contained? San Diego is pretty dang close to Mexico....if you know what I mean :(

I've heard that the swine flu is no worse than a normal flu and doesn't spread any easier. I don't understand why it's getting the press it is.

because like everything as of late the news likes to sensationalize stuff for ratings

Swine flu = regular flu as far as what it does to you

Its not any deadlier

Use good hand hygiene - not masks - to prevent swine flu spread, experts say

TORONTO - Images of Mexicans donning surgical masks in a bid to prevent swine flu infection may make Canadians wonder if they should follow suit. But except in certain health-care settings, experts say such a step isn't warranted - at least not yet.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Andrew Simor said surgical masks are recommended for staff in the close confines of hospitals and long-term care centres to prevent transmission of flu viruses and other microbes from patients to care providers.

The risk of health-care workers contracting influenza from an infected patient is increased because of prolonged close contact and medical procedures that may cause the patient "to cough and splutter all over you," said Simor of Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

But when it comes to the public at large, wearing masks would have little benefit, he said. "Those things don't happen as you're sort of going about your daily business buying groceries or watching a movie."

"There is absolutely no data to suggest this makes any difference or is at all protective for any individual. Now that's not to say it's going to cause any harm, but there's no evidence to suggest that it's actually effective."

Simor said that in his opinion, there is no need for Canadians to rush out to buy protective masks. Instead, he stressed the importance of good hand-washing practices to prevent transmission of the virus.

"Good hand hygiene is critical."

About 30 years ago there was an outbreak of swine flu in our area....I caught it. I was unconscious for 2 days with a fever that peaked at 106 degrees. It was some REAL nasty stuff. I actually had visions of God while I was out of it....I'm lucky to have survived. Being 20 and in great health probably helped. Roy is right about hand washing being the key.We were implementing more stringent food safety proceedures at our facility a couple years ago and I told our Production Manger to make a note of how many of our several hundred associates washed their hands before eating our Christmas Buffet....NO ONE did. GOD BLESS...

I swear it has something to do with it being called the Swine Flu. I remember the first one in '76 and what a big deal they made of it. We all went off to get swine flu shots until people started getting sick from the shots.

I recently watched the American Experience show on the Polio vaccine. None of this stuff is new, we just have 24 hour cable news on all the time looking to sell airtime. I don't think they are any worse than the muckraking journalists of 100 years ago, they just are more shrill and in your face due to the medium and the ability to reach people right in their living rooms with very little effort.

If you really want to get spooked, read The Hot Zone about the Ebola Virus, now that is something to worry about.

The problem with over-hyping this stuff is that one day one of these things is really going to be a problem and we won't take it seriously.

We have 6 reported cases in Maryland, 3 in Baltimore alone, but all of the people who got it are recovering and did not need hospitalization.

Update for all my fellow Marylanders: according to the CDC as of 10:30 EST this morning, there are currently NO confirmed cases of the virus here in the Old Line State:

What is being reported so far here in MD are "suspected" cases. :wishluck:

I work for the Johns Hopkins University, and we're getting e-mail briefings and updates on it every morning. I'm not always a HUGE fan of this state or Baltimore City specifically, but living and working near one of the best hospitals in the United States does have its advantages...

I'm not really worried about getting sick myself, but I'm considering the powers that be coming in and making some kind of "public gathering" judgement and shutting down the con. Some of the decisions that come from the so called "people in charge" just make me wonder.

Well they've officially changed the name to some sort of acronym. It seems the name 'swine flu' was causing people to panic. I heard on the radio that they were slaughtering massive numbers of pigs around the world due to the hysteria.

I don't have a tv but from what I've gleaned from passively reading stuff is that this is not much different than a regular flu, right?

So why the hysteria?

How about people just wash their hands, put their hands over their mouths when the cough or sneez, drink clean water and eat good food.

My favorite moment of the swine flu panic occurred this morning on CNN when Dr. Sanje Gupta recommended that for the time being we replace the handshake with an elbow bump.

It's not just there....next time you go out to eat, check out how many of the other diners go wash their hands before they eat....probably no one...unless you happen to be on hand for a Howard Hughes sighting. Most of the germs that affect us we give to ourselves. GOD BLESS...
