The top raw copy is the 9.8, based on the amount of cover paper above the top horizontal MCG banner. With only 4 copies in that top grade, it's a truly exceptional copy. And the 9.4 isn't too shabby, either!

Here's another month of raw picture frames, January 1972 cover date. There are 16 of these in the collection, and now's the time to post them, because the collection is leaving my hands by the end of the summer.

I added a new picture frame this week: Fantastic Four 125 with a bright red cover and "Action! Action! Action! With a mighty Marvel twist!"

Looking at the cover, I love the seventies logo with the trippy arching letters. It fits perfectly in the space above the picture frame, and there's even room for a Comics Code seal, so long as you place it in the jaws of the "C."

All kidding aside, this is the logo that I imprinted on as an eight-year old kid, although it wasn't the one on the newsstands when I first started buying. The first issue of FF I remember seeing on the racks was issue 161 with the Thing being snacked upon by a giant lizard. Cool cover, but it had this very business-like logo -- just straight-up block lettering with a drop shadow -- that never really did it for me. Jeff, the older kid across the street, had some "old" issues with the 'keystone' logo, and that was obviously the 'cool' logo.

I do also love Reed's completely ineffectual attempt to stop the Thing's beating. In the name of gravitas, I think Marvel was wise not to include the "boing! boing! boing!" sound effects.

My one complaint with the cover is the ratchet white outline Marvel put around corner-box Thing so his orange bricks wouldn't get lost in the red background.

I much prefer the more nuanced color gradient used on many of the other picture frame covers.

The story was fun, and there was one panel that (unintentionally) made me laugh out loud. Reed is hospitalized as a result of something that happened last issue. (I don't know what, but knowing Marvel, I'm sure it was "cataclysmic!") He comes to and realizes that he must go and save his kidnaped wife, even though he's incredibly weak.
