Well I hit the BIN on this one, never owned a copy before so I'm looking forward to cracking this out.

You silly Westcoaster, don't you know I'm the only comic book collector without a scanner :pullhair:

Take note of the carpet next time you bid on a Clink book :baiting::foryou:

Book resides in Canada, gets exported to Maine just to be reimported back into Canada. The post office makes more money than Clink or I

Enjoy it Peter :foryou:

Krap Jim, the shipping on this book alone is going to be about half the cost of this book. After I BIN'd it I just noticed Namisgr has a 9.4 in the VCC. Oh well, this puppy is going to be cracked out of its shell and will be enjoyed. (thumbs u

I think this is complete, but I there could be a few deletions on there. Also, there are some "tweeners" that fit the timeline, but either used a slightly different design (ASM 113) or the color choice/title placement make it a tough call (Cat 1).

BTW, a Marvel Picture Frame book is specifically from November of 1971 (25-cent Giants) to the end of 1972, with a few exceptions (like noted above + some series ended their PF runs in Nov while most went til Dec 1972).

Nice list.

Has it ever been mentioned which covers are the most rare and

difficult to find in a decent grade (VF up)

Yes. As Austin Powers might say, allow myself to quote myself:

From the department of useless and/or trivial facts:

- By most counts, there are 388 Picture Frame Marvels.

- There are 24 Picture Frame books that don’t have a single graded copy in 9.0 or better.

- There are 34 Picture Frame books that only have 1 graded copy in 9.0 or better.

- Books with no 9.0 or better copies:

Chili 18, 19, 20

Kid Colt Outlaw 157

Li’l Kids 4, 5, 6

Mighty Marvel Western 21

Millie the Model 194, 195, 196, 197, 198

My Love 20

Our Love Story 20

Rawhide Kid 105

Ringo Kid 16, 17

Two-Gun Kid 102, 103, 105, 106

Western Kid 2, 3

- Books with one 9.0 or better copies:

Harvey 3, 5, 6

Kid Colt Outlaw 164

Li’l Kids 9

Li’l Pals 1, 2

Marvel’s Greatest Comics 39

Marvel Super-Heroes 32

Marvel Tales 34, 40

Marvel Triple Action 6

Mighty Marvel Western 17, 20

Millie The Model 199

My Love 16, 18, 19

Our Love Story 14, 17, 19

Ringo Kid 13, 14, 15

Special Marvel Edition 6

Two-Gun Kid 101, 107

Western Gunfighters 8, 10

The census might have been updated since I compiled the list, but you'll still get the idea.

Has it ever been discussed why this particular design was created?

Not to get too deep on this subject but I like pop culture history enough to have may own theory.

I feel that Marvel whipped this design template up to stand up to the number one competition

of a child through young adult reader for entertainment of this time period which was color TV.

Color TV was on the horizon by 1966 because it became affordable enough for most middle

class families to buy and have. And by the 1970's the full swing of programming was into gear

and Marvel wanted to compete. Maybe it was that and the fact that they wanted to build a bridge

to their own Marvel characters that predominantly in cartoon series at the time.

Either way, I came to this assumption through not only the TV box shape but because these

covers could do what TV could not and that is break the plain of the box. I love that as a design

feature, because it causes a 3D type effect. No other artist was better at exploring this that the

main one for this series and that was Kaine.

It makes me wonder.

Has anyone ever seen a Marvel Picture Frame cover site?

I was thinking of creating one.

hm

Or someone should start a thread about them. :baiting::idea:

I was talking about a photo reference webpage that had all the books in order

according to title and release date...

:eyeroll:

That would be pretty cool. Go for it. GCD has scans of all the books but it would be great if they were better quality. And more easily accessible.
