OT - Collecting Frank Baum's Oz books

Do any of you collect original Oz books? What is the market like on these?

 

Also, there is an out of print three volume Oz Chronicles which contain all the stories. How rare is this set?

 

Info would be much appreciated.

You should go into the Gold section and check out BangZoom's thread. He probably has the original manuscripts, given the other stuff he's pulled out over the last couple of years.

Oz books are very collectible... The ones by Ruth Plumley Thompson are usually in high demand especially if they are 1st prints with dust jackets...

The 1st prints usually have around 12 color plates and can be rather pricey depending on condition..

The above link is Fred Trusts website and he is pretty fair in his pricing and well stocked...eBay auctions usually generate quite a bit of traffic for the right book so alot of times it's hard to score a "good deal" ...

 

If you plan on buying and collecting the Oz books then you may want to buy the Oz Bibliography so that you can identify 1st print 1st state books as that is important to know for pricing and collectability...

Looks like the first two books are the original Oz books written by L. Frank Baum. Ruth Plumly Thompson and a number of other authors continued the series for more than three decades after Baum's death in 1919. As a kid, I tried to read some of the non-Baum Oz books, but I never thought they were very good -- too many oddball characters and nonsensical plots. Book three consists of some of Baum's non-Oz books. I remember liking The Master Key, John Dough and the Cherub, and Sky Island. Many of the characters from these books make appearances in The Road to Oz at Ozma's birthday party. Interesting that they didn't include The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, which is probably Baum's best known non-Oz book.

I re read this entire series of books a couple of years ago, and enjoyed them even more as an adult!!

 

I cant recommend highly enough these stories!!

 

Good luck in hunting these originals down!!
