What are the best investment book or books if you had 30k to spend?

126 posts in this topic

Lets face it the $60,000 price tag on this book was over the top. I was on the phone with a very large and well known dealer shortly after this happened and at the time he felt it was utterly ridiculous for someone to pay that steep of a price. More mid range copies have surfaced (think Comiconnect has a 4.5 at auction right now) and a few higher grade raw copies have since popped up (Bangzoom's for one). It will be interesting to see where the CC 4.5 price tag ends up at next month. Lets face not too many people are looking to spend $50,000 on one book so the market for this can be very, very thin at any one time, especially when there has been a glut of super books that have not seen the market in years, even decades. I'm not surprised that the prices have come back to a "normal" range.

Add another $10k and you could have bought ALL-AMERICAN COMICS #16 CGC 5.5 in the latest Comiclink auction. This seems like a STEAL considering the same copy previously sold for $60,000 on Comiclink.

How a rare mega-key like this sold for 33% less than previously is a mystery, considering GREEN LANTERN fever is running high with the movie hype.

Whoever bought it has "instant equity" in the book.

It's possible that the original AA16 sale did not go through? That would "nullify" the original hammer price. That is is coming up for auction so soon does seem unusual.

The 4.5 won't hit its reserve.

YES!!! The comic collector's version of Godwin's Law. Let's trot out 181 every time supply and demand gets mentioned. Good show. Because every book is directly analogous to 181. :golfclap: That is probally the most awesome analysis ever.

If only Wolvie sported a little 'stache he'd be perfect.

Copper keys that are currently nothing compared to their Silver & Bronze bretren.

Turtles #1-4

Primer #2, 5

Grendel #1-3

Groo #1-8 (Pacific)

Megaton #3

Cry for Dawn #1-9

Sandman #1, 8

Animal Man #1-5

Swamp Thing #20, 21, 37

Dark Knight Returns #1-4

Batman #404-407, 417-420, 426-429

Apart from Turtles 1, I think the rest aren't great investments, nice to own, but as soon as the price on them go up, copies will appear

That's what they said about Bronze "keys" back in the late 80's....

(thumbs u

Apples and Oranges, sirrah. Even with CGC, pressing and all the parade of horribles, there are still Bronze keys that are tough(er) in high grade. MTU 1, Luke Cage 1, Marvel Spotlight 5 etc. All the books listed above were saved, loved, cared for and hoarded, by you, me, and everyone else that enjoys well written, well-drawn comics. Not rare, never rare and there are thousands of 9.8 copies out there of each (with the exception of the low print run books). Hell, I own two 9.8 yellow label copies of Sandman 8 myself and have about 10 9.0-9.6 copies.

PS: I love them all. <3

Ignore slabs. Buying slabs is a surefire way to lose money.

I'm talking raw copies at the giveaway prices they sell for now.

Then, when the time is right....slab and sell 9.8s.

Wanna know what I'm buying right now?

I'm not telling, but you can probably guess.

It DOES require learning how to buy 9.8s, pressing, or hiring someone who does (both.)

And it's true, that's what they did say about Bronze keys back in the 80's, and, outside of ultra high grade, they're not significantly rarer than 80's books. Last I checked, Defenders #1 is still averaging $100 in 9.0. Not bad for a book you paid $2-$3 for in 1988, and $25 to slab.

Sure, it's pretty speculative, but the downside is lower, and the reward is potentially far greater than the risk.

Supply and demand. There are thousands of Incredible Hulk #181s out there but there are millions of Wolverine fans worldwide who probally want it.

thank you I will take a bow for my analysis. (worship)

I personally would go for a Hulk 1 or a really sharp TOS 39. An AF 15 in the highest grade possible is a guarantee as well. A few others would be a Cap 1 or an early key batman book. Lots of Nice DC stuff out there too. Oh yeah, a Journey into mystery 83 isnt a bad way to go right now either. The movie hype will surely push this book along even further too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Think I got a good idea of how I am going to go. Actually made some bids on the ComicLink autions. I will see how it turns out.

Retract those bids and buy some comic art!

I thought about it. That Cap 117 cover is sweet! Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about original art and those OA pieces are nosebleed prices. Don't know how liquid they would be.

The more expensive the art is...the easier it is to move. believe it or not. Problem I always found with comics is that when I needed to sell something, people always wanted to give me $300 less than what I paid for it. I sold 1 piece of artwork and made 2500.00 on it,I never made that much on ANY comic I sold and i've had some good ones too... I sold all my comics for about 25K and bought art. I have 3 pieces with insurance on them for a bit more than double what I paid,If you have 30K to play with. I'd really start looking into comic art seriously and start learning...can't go wrong with big name artists. Adams,Wrightson,Frazetta,Bolland,Mcfarlane,Kirby and the like. Another problem I found with comics is that.."Oh it's a little off center,I'll look for a 9.6 for that AF#15" or "Well your FF#1 9.8 is nice but it has off white to white pages, I want one with white pages" (Disclaimer: No i don't own or have owned those books, just an example for the people who can't understand what they just read) So no matter what book it is,always someone who would shoot it down, became very frustrating...so I left it.

I don't know about you, but if I had 30K I'd go for a 10.0 of Lobo #1 mini series by Bisley or a 9.9 of Spider-Man #300. :jokealert::ohnoez::whee:

If I were just investing the money, I would by $30K worth of AF #15's.

BINGO - it may be boring way to invest.. but your 100 percent bet to make money.. big money...

I'd throw in FF#1 also....

If you want to take it a step farther invest in Showcase 22 and Green Lantern 7(first Sinestro) buy in mid to high grade then flip, repeat and rinse till the Green Lantern movie comes out. (thumbs u

1) House of Secrets 92 CGC 9.2-9.6 (a classic, and tough in 9.x grade)

2) Green Lantern 76 CC 9.0-9.6 (although heavily priced, still a super-key)

3) The Tick Special 1 CGC 9.4-9.8 (there were only 5K printed)

4) Sandman 1 CGC 9.6-9.8 (always considered a classic)

5) Albedo 2 CGC 9.0-9.8 (one of two 9.8s selling for $5K brought the attention back)

6) Destroyer Duck 1 CGC 9.6-9.8 (1st Groo)

7) Saga of the Swamp Thing 21 (Moore stories kick in), 37-40 (1st Hellblazer)

8) Death Rattle 8 CGC 9.6-9.8 (1st Xenozoic Tales - amazing stories and artwork)

9) The Goon 1 (Avatar) CGC 9.4-9.8 (heavily priced now due to the excitement, but a nice long-term investment if you can find them at the right price)

10) Vanguard Illustrated 7 CGC 9.4-9.8 (amazing Kaluta cover; 1st MR Monster; tough black cover to find without stress lines due to paper quality)

11) Walking Dead 1 CGC 9.6-9.8 (priced excessive right now due to pending AMC movie, but what an amazing storyline, and proves Moderns can break new ground)

12) Airboy 5 9.6-9.8 (1st Modern Valkyrie; Dave Stevens cover)

You find some of these as an investment, tuck them away for a few years and see what you have on your hands. MONEY!

Thanks for the list. I almost pulled the trigger on the House of Secrets 92 9.6 (1 of 9) in highest grade that was in the ComicLink auction.
