Amazing Spiderman # 5 hammers at $97,000

I actually bid on this book up to the 22K range. Man was I off by a bit. Was it pressed into a 9.8 or just resubbed?

Pretty sure it was pressed.

I believe it was a 9.6 with OW Pages at the Chicago show at a dealers booth.

The book was not pressed. It was a straight resub in NYC and I believe the book was unpressed even when it was a 9.6.

So....did CGC get it wrong the 1st time or the 2nd time?

They're human, right?

Was it an old label book when it was a 9.6 OW?

It was a 9.6 ow/w and I believe it was a new label book IIRC.

It was a 9.6 OW. The book was resubbed again for a PQ review after reaching 9.8 status. :gossip:

Show is over in 4 hours. I'm too lazy to make my way down there. :insane:

45K for the book as a 9.6 OW

97K for the SAME book as a 9.8 OW/W

:ohnoez:

Something you and I can finally agree on Chris.... :ohnoez:

While I agree. :ohnoez:

It's not our money, is it?

Exactly, as the person who bought the book (probably Tom B. hm) wanted to have the best copy known at any cost.

Unless it's a price variant Star Wars #1, right? :makepoint:

:ohnoez:

To some people its all about buying the label.

I agree with you whole heartedly. How can an extra 45k be generated on somebodies opinion?? Thats ridiculous IMO

What's ridiculous is that an extra 45K can be generated by a CHANGE of opinion.

9.8 pre-1964 Marvels are a great investment. Personally, I'd rather buy $97k worth of GA, but this is a nice book...not to mention the 9.2 Hulk #1 that went for $125 large in Heritage a few days ago :P

CGC's original opinion was that the book was a 9.6 OW

It was their change of opinion that made it a 9.8 OW/W

It's coo-coo bananas, and has absolutely nothing to do with "hey, other people spend their money the way they want, so who cares?"

It is a total lack of perspective.

It's THE SAME BOOK. And, if reports are to be believed, NOTHING was done to the book. It was literally, physically, chemically, molecularly the EXACT SAME BOOK in the EXACT SAME CONDITION.

But replace that 6 with an 8, and VOILA!

It's worth 2-3 times what it was.

Label chasing, and label chasing only.

BUT....take heart, those of you who understand how ridiculous this really is....

...the EXACT same thing happened in coins, and the market crashed...hard.

So, leave the ultra high grade silliness to the label chasers...who, at the end of the day, really CAN spend their money, as ill advised as it may be, on nothing but labels....and enjoy the 9.4s, the 9.2s, the 9.0s...books that, while not perfect, can still be quite stunning, and possess distinctive character in their slight flaws that ultra highs don't.

What a beautiful world that will be..... :cloud9:

PS: CGC didn't get it wrong either time. Grading between the "points" is subjective.

PPS: by the way, this highlights why there will eventually be a 9.7, 9.5, 9.3, 9.1....it's only a matter of time.

Does anyone else think it seems a little suspicious? I mean, a CGC grader is in a postion to make a big chunk of $$$ with that kind of power. hm
