ComicConnect Jan Event auction - multiple covers and errors

43 posts in this topic

Just been looking through the Jan ComicConnect auction.

Must be an interesting story behind the collection being sold.

Owner seems to have specialised in multiple cover issues - from double to sextuple covers and comics with a variety of errors (color printing errors to books where the inside pages have been stacked incorrectly - ie page 1 wrap in centre of stack rather than the outer wrap).

I'm no expert on grading at all. I think it's interesting that the grade of the inner cover is a factor in the overall grade of the book. The Batman 245 CGC 8.5 caught my attention and the Batman 291 CGC 9.4

By the way Batman 291 was my first comic book my mom bought for me when I was 8 and the cover is still one of my favorites.

The inner cover and interior are the only factors. The outside 2nd(and 3rd or 4th) have no bearing on the grade.

Why is that?

Maybe CGC considers the extra covers a manufacturing error? The Action #28 in the CC auction is a good example. The inner cover and interior grades out at 8.5. Should that grade be dragged down by an extra cover that grades out at 6.5?

I think it's the right way to grade a book with multiple covers. It they let a lower grade exterior cover drag down the interior cover and book, then folks with dollar signs in their eyes would be tempted to remove the extra covers, thus bringing the grade up.

That`s exactly the reason.

Removal of the outer cover has already occurred just to enhance the appeal of certain books even when the submitter knew it would have no effect on the grade. :(

That's just part of the CGC era. If the book is slabbed, an owner may very well prefer to have the nicer cover visible. Heck, I'd never remove an extra cover, but to be honest, the Action #28 that I mentioned earlier would be much more enticing to me if there wasn't a 6.5 cover hiding that 8.5 cover.

I always figured they were just grading the highest cover. Realistically, that's what the book is, no? You can rip all the others off and as long as that one stays that's the grade.

On the other hand, you could try and repeat this money-making scheme...

I don't get it. How did it go from 9.6 to 8.5?
