ComicConnect Jan Event auction - multiple covers and errors

43 posts in this topic

I think it's the right way to grade a book with multiple covers. It they let a lower grade exterior cover drag down the interior cover and book, then folks with dollar signs in their eyes would be tempted to remove the extra covers, thus bringing the grade up.

That`s exactly the reason.

Removal of the outer cover has already occurred just to enhance the appeal of certain books even when the submitter knew it would have no effect on the grade. :(

Wow, people will mess with a comic book just for monetary benefit?!

I`m shocked, I tell you, shocked!

I really think double cover and error books are a neglected corner of this hobby, particularly in relation to coins and stamps. Glad to see Metropolis is highlighting the coin/stamp error values as they promote this sale.

I can't count the number of times I bid on eBay for a cool double cover book only to see "gijoed" win it. The guy was focussed! Now maybe I'll have a chance at some of those books for which I was eBay underbidder...

I have one where there's a spare

piece of paper off the cover of a SA marvel that has a partial dc cover on it.

Wow, that is pretty cool.

Here's the image from my FF 74 I mentioned.....can't remember if it's a superman or strange adventures issue 205.......I'm sure someone can figure it out.

I'm no expert on grading at all. I think it's interesting that the grade of the inner cover is a factor in the overall grade of the book. The Batman 245 CGC 8.5 caught my attention and the Batman 291 CGC 9.4

By the way Batman 291 was my first comic book my mom bought for me when I was 8 and the cover is still one of my favorites.

The inner cover and interior are the only factors. The outside 2nd(and 3rd or 4th) have no bearing on the grade.

they used to, though hm

Look at the labels, it still says 8.0 & 9.6, but somehow was labeled an 8.5 and went for 1/4 the previous price.

I'd be PIZZED!

But why would anyone resub this book, since it already has a 9.6 grade? What could they have possibly been thinking (or hoping for)?

And if CGC bases the grade on the inner cover, why did the overall grade drop to 8.5, since it still says the inner cover grades out at 9.6? Did something happen to the interior of the book in between the two gradings? If the 2 covers are still graded at 8.0 and 9.6, then what else could have caused the overall grade to drop to drastically?

Weird.

That was a dumb re-sub (unless the seller wanted to read it and then later wanted to sell). I have seen paper quality pull down an otherwise high-grade double cover, but this is weird.

Not that I ever saw with CGC, nor was it something I saw prior to CGC. If it had been widespread, there would be very few double covers remaining in existence and that, imho, would be quite sad.

Most every time the inner cover will be the higher graded of the multiple covers. This is not ALWAYS the case though. I had over 3 short boxes of double and up covers. Once in a blue moon the outer cover was better than the inside cover.

Got any golden age FF's like Comicdey's? I'm in the market. meh

looks like I need to slip my ga FF into a coverless GA so it doesn't feel bad about being undersized.
