Popular Post Sauce Dog
I'm now officially in the club (again). Jerry the Jitterbug has completed the work on my pile of scraps (literally. I assembled a copy from buying incomplete parts and pieces) it has just come back from CGC. How it started (not shown, the half dozen pieces that came off the cover when I removed tape, the replacement 1st wrap, back cover harvested from another comic). My goal was to try to build my grail the cheapest way possible - I set a budget limit to what a 0.5 last sold when I started this project ($3000 at the time, early 2023), and while some of the parts I could have bought cheaper had I waited 6-12 months I still came in under budget. In total to buy all the parts, have Jerry do the work (free, but required a nice comic offering for his services), and then grading cost me $2650. How it's going: edit: It looks good - but what you can't tell from this image is that CGC damaged the book during slabbing. Jerry covers this in the video below, but you can't really see it clearly there but it's obvious in hand. Edges are crushed and folded over, and there is a LONG crease/wrinkle running the entire back cover. The front cover is also very wavy now. It seems they used the wrong size inner sleeve for the book. Talking with CGC today and potentially going back as a ME. CGC claims no responsibility for any of these issues, ME reholdering denied. Even though both Jerry and I had it pegged as being a 3.0 (or possibly a 3.5) we are both still very happy with it; especially that it came back the Conserved label that we were aiming for. The 90-day average price for a CGC 0.5 Universal of this book is currently $3267, so having invested an amount well below that for a 2.5 Conserved is a total win - goes to show you that you don't have to be priced out of owning a grail if you have patience and slowly build it up by sourcing bottom of the barrel scraps Jerry documented the entire process of conserving the book, in a total of 29 videos that cover assessment, cleaning, leaf casting, pressing, assembly, everything, so worth watching if you are interested in seeing what it takes to bring a literally pile of wrecked paper into a nice, complete presentable grail. Sauce Dog
Oh, to be totally accurate this started as a RESTORED NG (Missing the cover and the entire first page, reproduction cover - and a WRONG reproduction of page one - attached to the book with double sided tape, CGC misidentified that tape as glue...yikes). Not sure what the owner was smoking that made him think all this would get him a 0.5 (he says he did all that amateur work hoping for that grade, and I had to give him a few lessons on actually turning NG books to 0.5 properly), but I was happy to buy it off him for cheap just to have some sort of X-Men #1 in my collection...but then decided to go all out on it once a loose original cover came up for sale locally. So this junk went from Restored NG to Conserved 2.5. Drummy and kobra65
