First appearance of Thor

I've been redoing some of my scripts since Arch changed what could be inserted with your HTML in a post. Anyways, for this little guys coming out party here is the first appearance of Thor. April 1940, Weird Comics.

Tested on latest versions of IE8,Opera,FF,Chrome

 

BTW: use the back and forward buttons on the menubar above the image to change pages in the story.

The similarities are many. The concept of Thor investing his powers in a mortal, the hammer that returns to its owner, the meek guy who becomes Thor.

Yup, it sort of seems likely to me Stan at some point referenced this, possibly even as some vague memory which he couldn't even apply a source to, for the Marvel adapptation of Thor.

Tracing origins is always interesting. The hammer that returns is Norse legend and a meek guy who gains powers from a scientific or supernatural source became comic book archetype overnight. As with folk songs, it's difficult to ascertain what is borrowed, researched or invented. ( :shy: Though Stan or Jack probably read the story.)

That is a very interesting story.

 

I have no doubt that the tale influenced Stan and/or Jack with the creation of Marvel's THOR.

I will say that the concepts in WEIRD COMICS #1 has many more of the concepts that would surface in JIM 83 than this story.

There is a 9 page IRON ACE story titled "The Mighty Thor" in Air Fighters Comics v1n5

(February 1943)

 

THOR and the FAIRY TALE TELLER in Crack Comics #48

(May 1947)

 

Not sure if these all are NORSE FOLKLORE stories, or what.. (shrug)
