I love hearing stories like this, gives me fuel to dig.

Here are some of my better ones...

ASM 86, eBay: $40, slabbed at 9.4 sold: $1600

FF 54, eBay: $65, slabbed at 9.6 sold: $800

FF 64, eBay: $30, slabbed at 9.6 sold: $800

FF 68, eBay: $30, slabbed at 9.6 sold: $1100

FF 110 variant, store: $32, slabbed at 9.4 sold: $800

Batman 234, boards: $65, slabbed 9.6 sold: $1300

Batman 261, eBay: $12, slabbed 9.8 sold: $600

Sadly, these are all from a few years ago. No big scores lately, but I haven't been nearly as diligent as I used to be in searching for nice stuff. Stupid "real" job.

Bought a Caliber presents 1 off the rack and submitted it last year. Came back 9.8 wp. now resides in a fellow boardies collection.

And William was overjoyed to finally find a copy at that grade.

Maybe one day for me. :insane:

While selling books at an upstate NY show to raise money for college, a guy came up to me and asked if I buy books as well as sell. When I told him yes, he asked if I wanted to take a look at two boxes he had. It turned out one box was for sale so he could make room in his house, one was just to ask my opinion of value.

Box I bought:

- Daredevil 1-25, average 5.5-7.0

- Avengers 1-100, average 5.0-6.0

- Tales of Suspense 57-90 (+), average 6.0-6.5

- Strange Tales 169-171, average 8.0

- Fantastic Four 31-100

- Batman 171, 200, average 8.0

- Much, much more.

Box he kept due to sentimental attachment:

Amazing Spider-Man 1-200, bought for him by his dad over the years. Average condition, 9.0 condition. He wouldn't even think of selling them because they all came from his deceased dad. But he had multiples of some issues, so he gave me an ASM 129 for letting him know what he had sitting in the box.

Purchased two raw books from Brent at Quality....Fighting American 1 and Mask Comics 1. Brent had them at 8.0-8.5 and 4.0 respectively. Submitted them and the FA came back a 9.0 OW and the Mask came back as a 6.0 OW. The FA is the highest graded on the census and the Mask is close to the top. My best scores ever.

My favorite is many years ago (pre CGC) bought a small stack of 10-12 VG-VF Timelys that also included a few keys including Human Torch 1 (VG-) an All American 61 (VF) and a Whiz 25 (VG) for roughly half the going rate at the time. They were found in a chest inside an old barn. I bought them from a local dealer who recently found them. He kept the Cap 1 and Action 17. I think he still might have them.

Made about $300-$1200 a book.

I haven't had that many great scores on the boards here. One person sold me a Star Wars variant (knowing it was a variant) for $10. Sold it for $250. I never understood why he sold it so cheap. Didn't ask.

Not just 'no,' but $*(% no.

If I buy something, it's a pretty good bet it's going to be worthless in a year, if it isn't worthless to begin with.

This goes for the stock market too, apparently. And don't take me with you to the casinos, either

I've had a number of "hits" over the years -- though I've been trolling flea markets and fairs for about twenty years now -- not just for comics but for a number of different collectibles that catch my attention. Just a few weeks ago, I managed to get two original 1952 Marilyn Monroe calendars in decent shape with full dates pads. This is the calendar that originally displayed the famous pose that Hefner later bought for his first issue of Playboy. You can find 1953-1956 calendars since by then everyone knew that the girl in the image was Marilyn Monroe but the 1952 calendar which came out before Monroe was identifed is very hard to come by. I haven't seen one sell in a while but they should easily go for at least $1,000 each. One of them cost me $18 and the other $220. At the same flea market, I also managed to get 115 1938 Horrors of War cards ranging from VG to EX-NM condition for about $500. Again, for those who don't know, the Horrors of War cards are probably the mostly highly prized non-sport card collectible right now with graded NM copies easily going for $300+ a piece.

On the comic book front, I managed to get an amazing Wonder Comics #13 raw at a local antique auction a number of years ago for I think about $400. When I submitted it to CGC, I was blown away to have it come back with this grade...

Nothing big, and I've mentioned them before. Still waiting for the motherlode. My favorite stories so far are the TMNT 1 for $66 and the WM FF 10.

First X-Men comic ever was a raw 9.6 Uncanny # 248 for 20 cents at a garage sale. It blew up about two months later, sold it after a year for $18.

Bought a raw 9.0 All Star Western 10 in 1996 for $45. Sold it 8 years later for $270 (annual return of 20% per year compounded).

Bought a raw 9.8 Ultimate Spider-Man # 1 for $10 (part of a bulk deal). Sold it at its peak on Ebay for $181. If anyone knows of a higher price paid for a raw copy, let me know.

And then there was Valiant. The week Unity # 0 came out, I bought the 7 pre-unity issues my buddy had for $.25 below cover price each. Included Magnus # 12 for $3 that I sold to my comic shop a year later for $45.

This was a pretty good score from the Pacific Coast collection prior to the advent of CGC that I've posted before. It was a followup purchase to the PC FF12 that cost $800 and was subsequently graded by CGC at 9.0:

They were graded by CGC as follows:

FF33 - cgc 9.6

FF36 - cgc 9.6

FF51 - cgc 9.6

FF55 - cgc 9.6

JIM 90 - cgc 7.0 (the pre-chipping hammer)

JIM 115 - cgc 9.6

JIM 117 - cgc 9.4

JIM 118 - cgc 8.5

JIM 119 - cgc 9.2

JIM 122 - cgc 9.6

Thor 134 - cgc 9.4
