Where are the Mad Magazine collectors?

Good grief; I'm glad I never decided to collect MADs.  Between all the various annuals and special editions, plus trying to track down copies with inserts intact, etc...

I thought the Warrens were a rabbit hole, but these would drive you... well... MAD!

Kudos to you strong souls who have taken on the challenge.

So what is one way the MAD Annual obsessive can deal with all the excess issues with no inserts or partial inserts present? Why custom binding perhaps? Here's an example now!!!

That is a great way to have those! I ought to do that too.

I have a complete collection. I started at around 10 when my grandpa bought me #72. Bought them new ever since and went back and found the earlier ones by trading with kids in the neighborhood, used book stores, garage sales and flea markets. A life long obsession.

The thrill of the hunt! The many blind alleys of there possibly being an insert under all that plastic and tape!! All you Warren guys have to worry about is whether that bloody Captain Company order form on the last page got used! Such a mishugas!!!

I think I'll be putting my MAD collection up for sale soon.  I have stuff from my dad that he had back in 1959 through to about 1980.  Then there's my own stuff from the early 1990's.  I stopped buying them in 1995 because they weren't the same as the old MAD.

Where were you a month ago when I was selling a bunch of MAD stuff here on the boards???

In Texas...unplugged from the furshluginer Internet...B|  I just looked for your sale and couldn't find it.  What did you do, remove it?  Don't ever do that...some of us look for older sales to see what was offered...

Happy Turkey Day!

When you say "complete collection," do you just mean all of the numbered issues, or everything ever published under the MAD copyright?  It's the latter that would be the biggest headache--all the extra annuals and other publications that weren't part of the numbered run itself.

All of the numbered issues, all of the earlier annuals and the first 25 paperbacks. In addition, most of the MAD send away items and all the hardback books and records. I bought most of them when they came out. I have a pretty good collection of pre-MAD Alfred E Neuman items ( my favorite stuff to seek out).

No, probably mid Sept and buried about 10 pages back.

As I mentioned a week or so ago, I'll be putting up my MAD collection for sale...most of which came from my dad.  Hell, I'll bet a few were even with him in Vietnam back in '67/'68.  I can't verify that because he doesn't remember. :)

I'm going through these one at a time to check for condition and grade estimates.  Some collector's may not care about grade, but that's what I do.  Then I have to scan them all.  A bunch of them are well worn from a lot of reading (my dad).  I've read each of them once, then back into a box they went.  This was a long time ago.  I'll be bagging/boarding them all.  At least they were laid flat in the box, and out of humidity.  Lot's of tanning/foxing on the older ones though. :(

Here's a few examples of what's in the collection.  When I'm ready to start listing them, I'll post it in the announcements thread.

Did your dad send away for any of the MAD products offered inside?

No.  A few inserts are missing, like the records, but the mags are intact otherwise...so far.  I'm still going through them though, so don't quote me. Lol

I haven't touched them in a few days.  Got the crud, so I'll wait until I'm better. 🤧🤧
