Speculating on Moderns that are going to heat up BEFORE they ship THIS week.

Now, if I remember correctly, Walking Dead was a pretty late post-release buzz book, right? It was definitely a slow, but strong, building book. But I don't think it really hit until issue 25. Several years ago, standing in line for Kirkman's signature, I was talking to a comic shop owner who told me that he way over ordered WD #1 and they just didn't move. He had about 50 sitting around. So he put them in a discount box for 50 cents a piece. He was definitely kicking himself. So, in regards to that.... any speculations on similar post-release books? This is probably a good question for Larry and any other shop owners. Do you see interest gaining on recent books? I read, I think on Bleeding, that Kill Shakespeare was one that was slowly building under the radar. Maybe Hack & Slash..... now that they've found their comfort stride with a new publisher and have a series coming out to connect the current to the old at Devils Due.

$25. Why would a retailer be so desperate for $25 for the sake of sitting on a bunch of #1s just on the off-chance? This is what I don't understand about that, I know it's rare that a Modern #1 will hit the heights of Walking Dead, but even if you just keep them for sale at cover and adjust accordingly it's not going to kill you is it?

Did YOU see this? If not I'm crying urban legend.

I ordered 3. It was out of stock at diamond by noontime. Greg Bulls bought up the remaining copies. I got mine from him.

Nope. Definitely didn't see it. He said the reason was he has a signing with Kirkman. Half of them were signed. I didn't know the guy. He could've been lying. Doesn't stop me from daydreaming and pretending that I have that box of discounted WD #1's sitting in my house.

"but one of the covers was awful (looked like a modern version of Liefeld)."

If you're talk about the "after kirby" (Hulk?) cover, then that's the cover I liked and so did everyone else (all adults, some of them in their 50's) who looked at it in the two comic shops I went to. In fact, one of the shop owners, a grizzled comic veteran of about 40 years, specifically said, "normally I don't like when they do these sort of cover swipes, but this one is cool." taste is subjective. the "blood skull" cover I find kindah boring and actually left two of them on the rack.

Glad you're decided to start the new thread Larry and will be checking in every week to see what you've come up with. I don't speculate myself but I enjoy hearing the trevails of those that do. (thumbs u

I like it. Can't wait to see the color version. Definitely way better then the standard skull print. Are you doing a 1000 print run?

I can see the Action book being a short-term. But not long term.

Don't really see the draw for SOL #2. The schedule has killed it for many and they didn't have many under their belt. If the book goes for a long time, the low print run would help it.

I simply can't understand Skullkickers. Seems like there is so much speculation on new Image books because of past successes by the company (like WD, Invincible, Chew, etc). I'm interested to hear if the book was actually good, but one of the covers was awful (looked like a modern version of Liefeld).

Makes me wonder why more people don't throw that same money into known good books with small print runs. Books like Locke & Key #1.

Pat

Thought Skull Kickers was terrible. Its art was very hard for me to stay with and the story even less. I guess there is a market for this, but its Not Walking Dead, Invincible, or even Chew. MG was much better. Just my two cents.

Aren't people throwing money into L&K #1 1st print when one pops up for sale? Not huge money, but respectable money it seems.

Action was a hit. Sold out regular order. Re-order arrives Friday.

Don't see it going above cover. Beware.

People kept saying, Ohhhhhh Grodd.

No "civilian" play on Chloe Sullivan.

I was right. I was wrong.

The Death appearance has been known for months (posted a thread about it some time back here on the boards).

I guess my point is that I don't see Skullkickers being in the realm of any of the books I previously mentioned (FSB summed up my point well). But it's early, who knows.

Haunt is absolute garbage. Poor story and pretty drab art color. Unless it massively improves, I see no upside on this book.

Nemesis is a tough one. Shipping schedule is absurb. Being Millar, how fast it sold out, and potential movie might give it a little steam.

For Walking Dead, I don't recall it taking 25 issues to heat up. Seems like people were on it by issue 10. Wizard had previewed it around 6-7.

i don't think that sort of thing always works, i just happened to like that one

the whole thing seems to have lost some steam as I didn't get a bid on my copy priced at $8 in 9.6-9.8 condition. i guess the folks willing to pay a premium for it did so on days 1 and 2.

Nemesis was my shops top selling comic last week. Narrowly edging Avengers.

But only one more issue to go. Great book. A movie would blow it up significantly. I sell #1's for $7. Superior is the highest qty regular issue I have on order. Heard Forbidden Planet has a regional shop variant coming..

Skullkickers is certainly not my taste. The ONLY people interested in it seem to have $$ as a motivation. Not reading.

Are those Larry variants or the regular ones?

My main shop I go to for newer stuff, admittedly, ordered a lot of these. They had #1s on the rack well past #2s release, but they seem to be finally gone (or the extras were tucked away). Whenever I see my comic shop order THAT many of a comic and it isn't $1 I tend to shy away. One of his workers speculated big on Kick-Arse so maybe he convinced him to order like and extra 200 copies. I guess every mini-market is different.

Kick- 2 #1 Excl. variant is up for sale at Ultimate Comics (Domestic) and Forbidden (Intl.). It's limited to 1500 copies. It's an ok cover... but for less then $10 bucks shipped.... great deal. Ordered one. Seems like a no brainer for us speculators. Ultimate burned A LOT of people on the Walking Dead 75 fiasco. They'll still sell them out though.

What went wrong? you have Robert Kirkman of Walking Dead fame and Todd McFarlane of Spawn fame. hm

Personally I really like Haunt, but I get the feeling i'm the only one :insane: I liked Nemesis as well!
