Believe it or not, the Comiclink August focused auction has begun!

Maybe somebody realized the book was good enough that people would pay several times that much for the exact same book -- or, that people would pay several times as much for book with MORE damage -- if only it had a blue label instead of a purple one,

Perhaps.

and then he MANNEDUP by deciding to buy a book instead of a label color.

Nah.

Picked my first significant Duck in awhile. Prices have definitely dropped.

What's the terror in the river? I must know.

Wow, you got a great buy at less than half guide. Demand for GA duck books has not been very high lately.

You are joking about "What's the terror in the river?" ..Sea serpent with a typical Barks twist. I'm a newbie, so I sometimes can't tell if you guys are joking.

Beautiful book! I won this one for $258 (almost exactly half of guide) - I couldn't believe I got it so cheap :)

Unfortunately, it looks like the pre-hero DC books are following the same downward path as the early strip reprint books.

This is really unfortunate as these early rare books are an important part of comic book history and paved the way for the super-hero books that were to come. These books are definitely under-appreciated in today's super-hero focused market. :(

Great books. I was surprised as well about the downward path. It seems like if the characters didn`t have some other kinda of mainstream exposure then the juice just isn`t there. A real shame as these have a lot of importance and history to them.

I'm not sure what you mean by "downward path". The only books that came in below guide were the ones with unattractive covers, and even those got close to guide. The ones with the better covers, on the other hand, got multiples of guide (e.g., NA 27 and Adv 31). And most of the best covers (e.g., # 26, 28, 29, 32, 36 and 37) were not in the auction.

I have to agree with RHG on this one. I wish they were on a "downward" path so I could pick some up cheap. As it stands I pay way over guide for most of my pre hero stuff (especially anything with a Flessel/classic cover)

Downward path in the sense that all of the pre-hero DC books used to go for over guide, including the really early humour theme covers. Now it seems that these humour theme covers generally sell at only a discount to guide, while the over guide prices are limited to some of the more classic later adventure or action oriented covers. For example, take a look at issue #14 which doesn't come along too often, but yet was only able to sell at a 30% discount to condition guide. :(

Absolutely no surprise that the more harder to find issues or the ones with the nicer Flessel covers such as #26, #27, #30, #36, #37, etc. would still continue to go for a premium or even multiples to guide in the case of issue #27. (thumbs u

Sorry to digress a bit .... but has anyone received their shipping / tracking info from Comiclink in regards to the August Auction yet ?

The Auction has been over for a couple of weeks now. I've wondering what their turnaround time is like? I've paid for my books but no confirmation of shipping (yet). I know it was the end of summer and Labour Day holidays so I give them some leeway. Curious to know if anyone know if they've fallen behind or are they generally slow ?

Why have prices dropped? I know Fantagraphics is starting its comprehensive reprinting of the Barks duck stories in a color archive format, but would that be a factor?

I think he's referring to the Duck bubble that popped a couple years ago. All Ducks were selling for quite extraordinary prices that were double, triple and sometimes quadruple of what they go for now.

Here's a quote from yours truly from April 26, 2007: "Given how the market has developed, I don't expect to be buying many more Duck books myself. I feel that I can get a lot more excitement for my budget in other areas." It got that bad.

Fortunately, it turned out that the bubble was caused by 4-5 buyers who all appeared to start buying in 2005 or 2006 and all (except possibly one who may have kept his collection but is no longer buying) sold their collections again during the financial crisis, often at 50-75% losses. Today, I'd estimate that the prices are around the same level as in 2005, possibly lower.
