Recommendations for good independent comics?

32 posts in this topic

I am looking to get back into reading and collecting moderns, and curious if anyone had recommendations? Not really interested in standard superhero stuff, unless it's somehow unique (Batwoman comes to mind, on account of the artwork)

My current pull list includes:

Goon

Rachel Rising

Batwoman

THB

Umbrella Academy

already looking to check out:

Mouse Guard

Cursed Pirate Girl

Stuff of Legend

I have read most of Walking Dead already, and I think I'm in the minority who find it pretty dull. ;)

thanks

Matt

I can't recommend Scalped from DC high enough. (thumbs u

It's kind of Pulp Fiction on a modern day Indian reservation in South Dakota but also deals with poverty, alcoholism, family, drug abuse, history.

I've been doing the trades through library but will definitely buy HCs or Absolute's when they come out. It's a keeper!

A bonus is that it's supposed to end at issue #60 (currently at about issue #52) so it's not some behemoth of 600+ issues or anything.

Another great series is Locke & Key.

Books on my to read list:

Proof

Echo

Severed

Sweet Tooth

The Unwritten

Just read the first trade. A bit slow to start, but a pretty solid series.

Do the later volumes get better?

Pat

Pat,

I'd say yes, the series does pick up steam after the slow start and has been pretty good at changing the status quo of the main group of characters. After their introduction, they get into trouble, trouble that afford them a glimpse at what they are against. Then they get on the run and garner more information about what they need to do and with the Moby D_ick arc, they discover the essence of the problem which puts them on the offensive in the most recent arc so it's been moving in a unified direction though at a deliberate pace. I believe the series is worth your time, esp. if you like the first half of The Books of Magic run.
