Showcase 79 is pretty close to making that series the fave, but there are so many more stinkers in the 1st 100 compared to B&B until it became a Batman-centered vehicle

Think about the significance of the first one you mentioned for BB

Showcase, by leaps and bounds.

 

JLA is clearly the most significant into of all, but is easily overshadowed by the very beginning of the Silver Age, plus numerous other important first apps.

 

B&B, as noted, only re-intro'd the Hawks, and intro'd Metamorpho...and, ok, the Suicide Squad, too.

 

If we just add up the value of the runs, Showcase wins hands down.

 

In fact, Showcase does a fair job with JUST #4...

I voted for Showcase, as it intro'd many of DC's Silver Age heroes, including my guilty pleasure, Metal Men.

I think honestly there is no comparison. I don't see the two series as rivals. Showcase was the book to introduce new characters and give tryouts, in that vein, it was was the hands down winner.

 

B&B started as a adventure mag for 24 issues. Those of us who collect those will tell you it's one of the finest comics produced at the time with art by Kubert, Heath, etc. Viking Prince and Silent Knight, their various grey tone covers and excellent stories and art are just incredible books. It's apples and oranges to compare those to Showcase.

 

When B&B changed direction in issue 25 and going forward, I woud say, honestly that it had a greater impact than Showcase 25 and up.

 

I dont think that the Atom, Metal Men, etc. compare to JLA, Hawkman, Teen Titans, the team up concept, first Adams Batman, new Green Arrow, Metamorpho. Heck, JLA alone would win that contest.

 

So in Summary, Showcase 1-24 and B&B 24 are both great for different reasons, from 25 on, B&B was the better book. IMHO

B&B for the first 24 issues alone. I love those books

Brave and the Bold may be more significant to the overall history of comic books, as B&B 28 gave impetus to the creation of the Fantastic Four. But it's hard to say, as Showcase 4 is such a historically significant book.
