My observation over the past five years of increasing con attendance re: new-bloods is this - for new books, Harley and Deadpool are the most consistent sellers, DC New 52 (especially Batman) is still in demand four years out, and outside of Death of Wolverine #1-4 (still selling well at $40 per set), Deadpool, Spider-Gwen #1 and ASM vol 4 #4 most recent Marvel books are dead. However, the biggest place the new-blood is putting their money up here is...................Silver/Bronze/Copper keys. If it is a key back issue it will sell.

No demand for Ms Marvel or Captain Marvel? Or do you just see that demand from older collectors?

Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel sold around 33,000 and 22,000 copies last month. Great for an Image book but pretty low for Marvel. Pretty good secondary market books but not monthly darlings.

Speculators happen. There are good speculators and bad speculators (the ones Fastball mentioned that lie and create websites in order to manipulate the market to their own ends). In the end though, for speculators to survive, collectors must outnumber them by a decent ratio. If the ratio drops or, god forbid, speculators outnumber collectors, then speculators are in for a shock. Right now, I think there are still more collectors than speculators but the ratio has shrunk significantly over the last few years. in an oversimplified nutshell, the 90's crash happened because the speculator dollar vastly outnumbered the collector dollar.

The relationship between speculators and collectors can be mutually beneficial, like a symbiotic relationship but if the balance is thrown off, it can become parasitic. Collectors are the host body, and the host can only maintain a certain number of parasites before it becomes ill. I don't think we are there yet, but speculators seem to multiply faster than collectors, like weeds versus an old growth forrest. This analogy may be offensive to some, but I don't mean it to be because I don't have a problem with ethical speculators.

Oh, and a guy that sells a GA book and upgrades is not necessarily a speculator. Collectors have long preferred high grade books, hence the demand. I think you can trace the multiples of guide value for high grade books to the Edgar Church collection. Many of those books have not changed hands since Chuck sold them. The people that bought those books were and still are old growth collectors.

Speculators bring in money which creates interest.

Readers create interest as well.

Let`s enjoy this boom.

It`s one of the few hobbies that actually is experiencing growth.

Anybody want to talk stamps or Hummels?

Comics is one of the few hobbies that still has a good collecting core.

There is something new happening in the world of comics everyday. 2c

There cannot be many folks around this thread who know what a Hummel is!

I just visited CHU. I like this:

"Remember, variants go up, variants go down, but as long as you are buying art you like you can never go wrong."

"It is always great to walk into your local comic shop and pick up comics each Wednesday, it is even better when some of the books you picked up can be sold for multiple times cover price by the end of the week."

he must buy one of everything or just gets lucky that every week he buys a comic that's worth several times cover by the end of the week. Sunflower 1 I think is this weeks hot item. Not sure why though.

I picked up Sunflower yesterday and read it last night... eh, issue one felt very rushed in terms of story and I finished the issue thinking it was probably the least engaging #1 I've read in quite some time. I'm sure it's selling for more on eBay because of the print run, and I'll stick with it until next issue to see if it gets good, but as of right now... not feeling it.

Edit: pretty good art, though, and though the writer is one of the screenwriters for Black Mass (which I hear is pretty good, though I've not seen it), his IMDB suggests he hasn't a lot of writing experience.

Comicsheatingup.net is a cool site. It works best when they point out months/years old books that we might have forgotten about or never knew they existed. Clone was the first book I remember hearing about just prior to SDCC a couple of years ago. This heating up before it comes out business isn't really helpful to the average long term collector. Paying multiples of cover for a book that hasn't created readership demand just doesn't seem to last. Still, the guy who runs the site seems genuine in pointing out what he believes are important books you might want in your collection.

Which runs? The BA Starlin Captain Marvel books and BA Ms. Marvel #1 and #18 show demand, along with MSH #12/#13 and the Strange Tales Starlin Warlock arc.

As far as the new runs, Captain Marvel is slow - I move a #1 every from the last two series every second or third show but that is it. The 1st appearance of Kamala Ms. Marvel and her solo title has slowed a lot as well - I had no requests for it this fall, but it did sell decently at the shows this spring. Maybe the "All New" relaunch has killed interest in the back issues?

Sunflower has tanked down to $9.99.....I think that CHU site drives up prices on low print books for about 4 hours.

Its not CHU its the attention span on hot books right now. One book gets hot then another first one is forgotten or discarded. 2c

I will name this the discarded attention syndrome.

My stepfather has a bunch of Hummels that were his father's, they have to be 60 years old at least. My Mom and I agree they are insanely UGLY!

Ugly old things can be worth money though. lol

What is a Hummel ? ???

Ever hear about the Frog who needed a bank loan and all he had for collateral was a bunch of hummels?
