If you have more money than you know what to do with, YES!

Theres plenty of BSD's out there that the extra 362k doesnt make them even break a sweat unlike us schlubs selling our house and WIFE to drool over it (thumbs u

Well, those people need to give me some of that money. That's life-changing cash right there, for me anyway. Everything I own, right down to the shirt on my back, isn't even worth $25k.

Peace,

Chip

It's SHOCKING how much money some people have. My wifes best friend married this Doctor in Illinois. the house they have up there is like a palace! They bought a house down here just for VACATION for 8 million, spent god knows how much bulldozing it to the foundation and are building a $20 million house! FOR VACATIONS!!! :o

People like that, an extra 362k doesnt even make them think twice (shrug)

I think this is an extremely common misconception around here. With the odd exception here or there, people with that kind of dough don't collect comics. And if you had that kind of dough, you'd probably move on to "bigger and better" garbage to accumulate.

The appeal of this junk is that you can't afford it. Once you can, it's no longer sexy.

That's mostly true but there's obviously at least a handful of people collecting IMO.

Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt the people making the 7 figure buys lately had to liquidate all their assets to make their buys. I assume they have MORE than enough to cover those purchases without sweating too much (shrug)

I don't know, maybe I'm jaded.

When this topic comes up, I'm reminded of the dude who, back in 2003-ish, was putting together an insane ASM run. If I recall correctly, within several months he put together a complete run of 1-100 (or 150?) in mostly 9.6-9.8 with a few highest graded 9.4s. Lots of pedigrees too. And he was setting record prices in the process of accumulating these books, spending, I believe, close to 7 figures.

Shortly after getting the run together, he listed the entire thing on Heritage and took a bath. His losses on the ASM 1 alone were shocking. Apparently he sold because he needed to buy some piece of equipment for his medical practice, or something along those lines.

Often the thrill of collecting is in the hunt.

Once you find it and own it.....you can lose interest.

It's like watching a porno.....no...that's something else. Bad analogy.

I think it was that Doctor Jack guy. At least that's what I've heard him called.

There have been a few similar stories I've heard in the last 10 or 12 years. Although there have also been guys who come in with guns blazing and have stuck around in the long run. Of course, it makes me far happier when folks are in it for the long haul.

It's interesting that one or two guys like Dr. Jack can have such a dramatic effect on the price of high end books. And in my experience, it's been that way since the mid 1990s. I'd guess it was the same before that too, but that's when I started paying attention (and paying for books).

Most of the affluent people I've met make similar mistakes and they seem to make them to such a colossal scale, that it staggers the mind of a middle-class wage earner (like myself). However, maybe because of what they do/what they make - they have more frequent and more lucrative opportunities to recuperate from losses?

Yeah, probably the same guy. His ebay name was "italian_treasure" or something like that. Back when I was buying ASMs and tracking auction prices, he was burning it up.

I also remember seeing a number of guys come in around the success of the Spider-Man movie, buy up a storm, and disappear, back when ebay was more transparent and had a lot of quality material. Hopefully at least some of those guys held onto those books.

Could be. When I was actively collecting, I frequently sold books for the price I paid, or at a loss, because I was never trying to be a dealer/investor, just a hobbyist. Never lost more than I could afford to lose indulging in anything else (vacation, a sport, etc,,,), so it wasn't a big deal to me. I guess it's possible that these guys are just "playing" at a higher level, though that's a lot of money to play around with. Then again, there are celebrities with 4-5 figure/week coke habits, so (shrug)

Whoever bought up that MH Thrilling run on CC the other night must be doing pretty well for themselves to pay the price he/she did for the run! :o

Um..yeah. That was a hefty price to pay for a 2nd tier run of books.

Have you gotten a pm offering 10x's guide for your issue yet? lol

These types of discussions are interesting to me because it's a small niche number of people who

A: Can afford to spend that much money, and

B. Are into comic books

Factor B is a much smaller subset of A.

While there are a good number of 1%'s as they seem to be called now....I would think it's quite a small pool of those into spending their money on funny books.

Doug Schmell has a TOS 39 in 9.6....so I doubt he will go for this one.

If I could afford it....not sure I would do it. I'd probably get a 9.2 and be happy with the saved money. NM- is good enough for me. lol

Why is the bottom left corner of each book have a different color? I never noticed that before on

this issue.

Other thoughts are, as a long time IM collector who still owns a large run with a sprinkling of TOS

mixed in is that IM is a 2nd tier character who never got respect until these movies came out, in

my opinion. I just cannot see the popularity lasting for much longer along with the high prices

for high end IM material like this. The price, for what you get, seems terribly poor. When I think of

iconic Marvel characters.. IM is not it.

P.S. I really regret picking IM as a series to collect when I was young. Once started I felt the need

to continue well past the point I stopped enjoying the stories. Now when I look at the comics,

hundreds of them of just IM, I cringe at the poor stories most of them consist of. The sheer majority

just suck to be blunt. I wish I would have just collected the Marvel stories/titles that had the good stuff

and simply ignored the . Sigh. Wasted money.

It's just a slightly different cut on the issues. The 9.6 is just showing more of the table than the 8.0 copy.

I hear ya on the collecting to collect. I did it with x-men. I LOVED it from 130-175 and then it went down hill FAST IMO. I stopped reading them right before 200 but for some reason just kept buying TWO copies every month up to like #250. I don't think I've ever even opened 215-250. Straight from the LCS to the bag and board where they've sat for the last 20 years almost doh!

Only giving up mine for af15 9.6

I'll give up mine for free ... :whee:

I can't. I'm a comic book nerd with supermodel quality.

You must be young! Give it time! lol

We've been together off and on since she was 14 so an upgrade to a 9.6 TOS 39 might be the smart move at this point hm

:jokealert:

(just in case i leave a window open and she sees! :o

How does the saying go? No matter how sexy she is there's a guy out there sick of her s*****

Not exactly how it goes....

I respectfully disagree. Iron Man is a great title to collect. The TOS run is among my favorites with ASM and FF leading the charge.
