When I was a kid I was so obsessed with Batman that I read the Michael Fleisher Batman Encyclopedia.

There are so many incredible Batman stories that this thread is going to get bookmarked. Time to reread a few of them.

Whenever a non-comic fan asks me for advice on a Batman story to read, I always mention The Long Halloween first.

This and also DKR.

I might be the only person that thought Year One was kinda "meh".

Detective 471-476 by Steve Englehart & Marshall Rogers. Collected as "Strange Apparitions," also known as the Dark Detective run.

+1 for this.

I finally got a copy in TPB last week and have read it twice already.

I do think Long Halloween and The Dark Knight Returns should be on the list to vote as well.

For moderns - the new Court of Owls arc of the new 52 Batman, the Black Mirror arc and Gates of Gotham (all by Snyder) are my favorite of the last few years.

i bought Strange Apparitions in TPB when it was hard to find and they only did one print, when i was waiting for it through the post they announced a re-print for a fraction of the price i paid

Where to begin, where to begin....

What comes to mind right away?

Becoming a collector during the Bronze Age, I immediately drift to BATMAN #227, 232, 234, 235, 237, 242, 243, 244, 245, 251 and 259.

I always enjoyed those "secret life of Bruce Wayne" stories in the early #300's.

Pretty much any book between #430 and #607 is kindling, No Man's Land is the exception.

TEC 404 (Enemy Ace), #471 to #476, really any other TEC comic from about #400 to #450!

Tower of Babel for sure (JLA).

The latest Court of Owls is a great read.

BATMAN 234 - Return of Two-Face was one of my first and favourite BATMAN books as was #259 with The Shadow guest appearing.

However, I'll never forget the Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams classic BATMAN #251.

This one has my vote.
