Is there a top 100 Bronze Comics list?

121 posts in this topic

Spidey 96, 97, 98, 100, 136

Also, I think you meant Bats #227 (not Tec). Don't see why that wouldn't be included in the Top 100.

What is key about it? SIgnficant character introduced/dies? Character joins/forms a team for the 1st time?

ASM 96-98 - "Drug Books", No Comics code

ASM 100 - 100th issue of Marvel flagship title

ASM 136 -1st Harry as Goblin

Bats 227 - not really sure, but people love it

Yes, thanks...I was referring to Bats 227 & what is key abou this book...nothing seems to be the correct answer.

There isn't anything key about Bats 227, but the cover itself is arguably the best looking cover of the entire bronze age.

Yep. 'Classic Cover' is the answer.

I couldn't understand it either, but since returning to the hobby after a hiatus of several years, this is what I've found about Batman 227. Unlike Green Lantern, there is really is no definitive point between the SA and BA where Batman dropped the camp and became the Batman that we all know today. It was a slow evolution that spanned a few years. The cover for issue 227 has been reproduced in numerous magazines, books, documentaries, etc.. and has garnered a lot of attention, to the point where I think many collectors (even non-Batman fans) have accepted this issue to represent this period of transition. It is about as Gothic as Batman can get.

To a lesser degree, I think the advent of slabbing has shifted the emphasis a bit more towards great covers versus interior art. Either way, I've come to really love book and it sure as heck displays very well.

Detective 395 -- first O'Neil/ Adams collaboration. Not campy.

Night Nurse? That's grasping at straws.

Giant-Size Creatures #1

The Cat #1

At least Greer Nelson and Hellcat stayed around longer.

DG

Actually, yeah, GS Creatures 1 and Cat 1 should be on the list. Tigra's still around, right?

I'd argue that Night Nurse 1 deserves to be on the list for a number of reasons --

1) It's an uncommon book, tough to find in grade, and 9.0+ examples sell for big bucks.

2) It appeals to a number of different "category collectors" -- Romance, Marvel Picture-Frame, and Bronze Age first issues

What about Vampirella?

Vampirella 1 came out in late 1969, so, I know she's on the cusp, but I always think of her as a BA character.

How about the Phantom Stanger? Again, Showcase 80 came out in 1969, but he's another cusp character who's actual run was in the Bronze Age. And he's still kicking, right? He's got a new series out now.

It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but my feeling is that there is more interest out there in Night Nurse #1 than The Cat #1. The Cat you can still get in dollar boxes. Night Nurse on the other hand can be a pain to track down in any condition. The Cat #1 might be harder to get in ultra high grade because of the black cover, but my guess (and I don't have access to any historical sales figures to back this up) is that Night Nurse #1 will outperform The Cat #1 in every grade below 8.5.

I know it's not a mainstream book, so it's harder to judge against superhero stuff, but I think there's enough of an interest from romance collectors to call this a Bronze Age key.

I left these off my list only because they came out before 1970 and I was using that as my start date. Personally, though, I consider the Bronze Age to have started earlier -- late '68 or '69 -- and would consider all of these to be Bronze Age books, as well as some of the others I left off like Brave and the Bold #85.
