MOSTLY DIME SA DC's with DINOSAURS (and one Nazi Giant)

27 posts in this topic

in response the the Star Spangled War Stories thread, i promised to post some of the Dinosaur issues. so here is an 11 consecutive issue run.

these are not the best-of-the-best in my collections of SSWS's - they are the only Dino issues i own! no real HG copies here, but they're pretty decent for 10 Cent DC's from 1960 and 1961. as usual, the 12 center's start to improve in condition.

my personal favorites are #'s 95 and 98. DC's are often correctly maligned for goofy storytelling, but they did have some superior artists in their stables.

FFB can add # 94 to his Scuba collection. that book is also famous for the first appearance of the "Enemy Ace".

as always, purchased by me at Sid's in Orange NJ.

our army at war 151 is the first Enemy ACE (as I recall).

Thanks for posting the covers! Im fondest of the giant Nazi ( the pteryodactyl crushing the paratroop transport is mighty righteous as well).

Super nice comic's laugh.gif Looks like robot Buddy would be a cool read thumbsup2.gif

A lot of these covers look like ideas that led into Weird War Tales--WWT even intoduced "GI Robot" later in the series that looked like could have had its roots tied here...

Per Overstreet, SSWS #94 has a "Ghost Ace" story, Baron Von Richter as "The Enemy Ace" (Predates Our Army At War #151). i think they're the same dude 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

The Enemy Ace who appeared in Our army at War , Showcase , and SSWS was Hans Von Hammer not Baron Von Richter ... Sounds like a tryout for Enemy Ace though. Wasnt aware of that either so thanks for the heads up ! One more item for the Enemy Ace checklist.

Sweet covers! I especially like #96 and #97. Not the condition quality that we've become accustomed to out of BB, but they're still great to see. (Just kidding BB, I'm just jealous of your collection).

Thanks for the help posting those Jeff.

That #134 graded at a 9.2. I thought it was much better then that. But I'm not complaining since its the top one in the census. It really is hard to find high grades of any of these SSWS. Most that I find really show thier wear. That tells me people must of liked reading these books and just didn't take great care in handling them.

Care to see more?
