How X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Means 2000's X-MEN Is No Longer Canon

Collider was on the set of X-Men: Apocalypse and they learned how the X-Men universe has forever changed, following the timeline machinations of Days of Future Past. In this new timeline, the events of 2000's X-Men and all of its subsequent films (including the solo Wolverine films) are no longer canon.

  • The world that exists in Apocalypse differs from the other X-Men movies in that in this timeline, mutants were exposed to the world in 1973 during the debacle at the White House, and so they’re living out in the open and mostly accepted.
  • This new timeline is not necessarily leading towards the first X-Men movie anymore, although the philosophy is that the river will mostly end up in the same place with a few divergences here and there. This timeline is leading up to the New Future seen at the end of Days of Future Past, barring any other time travel changes.
  • In this new timeline, people could die that were alive in X-Men 1, 2 and 3, and people could survive who died in those three films.
  • Since the mutants aren’t in hiding anymore, this Charles Xavier’s School for the Gifted is a much bigger school and a “brighter, happier place” at the beginning of the film.
  • The other Fox comic book adaptations Deadpool, Gambit, Fantastic Four and Wolverine take place in a post-Days of Future Past, post-Apocalypse The stadium dropping on the White House in 1973 is a key piece of their history.

JoBlo posted an extended article talking about all the main characters in the upcoming movie.

Meet the X-Men: Apocalypse cast: Storm, Magneto, Cyclops, Psylocke & more!

Olivia Munn - Psylocke

In terms of how Munn views Psylocke in the X-Men cinematic universe, she says, “The way that I see Psylocke is as a very powerful weapon that has been used and abused by different people so that they could use her powers and she's somebody who's just looking for righteous purpose." As for Psylocke’s powers, Munn describes how they held back on certain elements, particularly her telepathic powers.

“Psylocke is telepathic and telekinetic. In the movie, we see her being a telekinetic. We don't see her being telepathic. It's a decision because this is the first time we've really been able to see the character of Psylocke and have her really, truly exist in the movie. I talked about it with Simon Kinberg. There's just so much going on, especially with Apocalypse's power, and then trying to take on all of the X-Men. When you are telepathic, I feel that it's a power that you want to hold close to your chest. It's a card that you don't want a lot of people to know about because it's so much more powerful when people don't know that you have this power.”

Past history and continuity has no bearing or influence on current story . . .

so it's just like the comics then.

Not entirely true... The events of the original timeline influenced the characters to make certain decisions, and they were eventually pushed into the war with the Sentinels that lead to the change in the timeline back back in the '70s. So even though we're in a new reality with a new canon, the first continuity remains important to the overall story when considering it as a whole.

Olivia Munn Discusses Psylocke's Powers & A Possible 'Captain Britain' Connection In 'X-Men: Apocalypse'

Will the film also remain faithful to the character's comic book origins in the film? Munn hinted that we would see some of of that alluded to in the film as well as her connections to Captain Britain as there is "a small, subtle references to it with Apocalypse. For people who love and know Psylocke, they will know who she is fully formed. You would know her storyline."

Captain Britain??!!

:o

I have a bad feeling about this...

Well, it's Fox, so if Bryan Singer is losing it, there's no safety net to catch him. No need to panic yet though.

I think it looks good, but I've been awaiting an X-Men reboot for too long now.

Kinda on board with that. Was disappointed to see how much of the "black leather armor" look has already worked its way back in. Even in DoFP, the future scenes had some people in not-black-leather. Was really hoping that they'd have waited until at least the 90's -themed movie before going to the black leather.
