Which copper books cracked the $100 barrier...but not fueled by a movie?

117 posts in this topic

Yep. Which copper age comicbooks have cracked the $100 barrier based on their own merits. Not due to speculation of an impending movie appearance. Just due to their own merits as a good story or an interesting character intro?

Note...please exclude 9.6 or 9.8 graded books because the grade is too much of a factor. The idea is to identify steady movers based on their importance alone.

Thanks for any help with this.

Steve

I'm curious how this isn't akin to the other threads asking for hot books?

I'll give you no-brainers. New Teen Titans #2 and #44. Neither are movie related.

First...thanks for your help with the books...I did not know about the Teen Titans issues...I'm just starting to collect Copper after a lifetime chasing Silver Age. Second, that's a good question. How this differs is that it qualifies "how hot". Some people might think a book is "hot" if it attains $40...and they are debateably correct. Also, it cuts out all of the books that may be hot due to an impending movie or television show. To me, those might be a flash in the pan, and I hate to buy something and find out that it was a flash in the pan.

It is my sincere hope that this thread will benefit anyone who contributes. Drilling down on a topic can provide new insights.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

I would think we would throw TV into the classifier as well and with that NTT #2 would be removed.

Also, OP, are you talking graded or raw? Big difference.

Ah, I didn't think about the "mania" behind finding a 9.8. Let's say "any", but only up to a grade of 9.4. Sometimes a book can get to 9.6 or 9.8 primarily due to the grade instead of the importance so we should exclude those. The idea behind this thread is to try to identify books that are important by their own merit such that they have a proven track record.

I'll edit the first post. BTW, what does TV stand for?

Actually the bump in Nightwing's first appearance since late last year was the result of movie speculation, as it was rumored on Twitter that he would be appearing in the Superman/Batman movie. It was the same reason why Doomsday's first appearance caught fire and it came from the same person who mentioned Wonder Woman appearing, which of course was eventually confirmed.

If we're looking at raw books only, the list is very small...maybe ASM #300, Bone #1, NM #98

I never saw New Teen Titans #2 and #44 selling for $100+ until very recently...and the raw copies rarely eclipse $100.

New Mutants #98

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

Albedo #2

Grendel #1

Miracleman #15

I did think this was an exclusive club. Would Batman Adventures #12 make this list, or is that Modern Age?

Can anyone think of any more?

CFD 1 was a raw $100 book. Thorn: Tales from the Lantern, but that is pretty obscure. Men in Black 1 definitely sold for $100 in the late 90's, but maybe not consistently, and it was fueled by a movie. Both CP 1 and Crow 1 are borderline. They were very often priced at or above $100, but I don't know if they sold for that.

A few more

Miracleman #1 Gold Ed.

Superman #75 Platinum

Spider-Man #1 Platinum

There were no DC Comics that hit the $100 mark before movie hype. Batman Adventures #12 passed the $100 mark just in the last 6 months.

If you are looking for Marvel and DC Comics then you are looking the wrong place. Independent publishers still rule the Copper age.

There are a few others that were just below $100 until recently.

Cry for Dawn #1

Evil Ernie #1

Love and Rockets #1

Uncanny X-Men #266 - yeah there are odd raw copies sold for just over $100 but most are below

Superman #409 logo variant is worth way way more than $100 - there are less than 5 known copies, I have been offered over $600 for my copy.
