Tell me this cover isn't about as cool as it gets...

When Bill Gaines offered Russ Cochran any piece of original art from his collection, his first choice was Weird Science-Fantasy 29. Frazetta owned that one, so Cochran's second choice was HOF 18. Definitely a masterpiece.

 

So Larry are you saying this is second best? :grin:

It was also the first reprint endeavor for Cochran. He took that first piece of art that Bill reluctantly parted with and published posters of this cover in black and white at a buck apiece. I've got one, and not too hard to find if you watch eBay. Love this cover. So much bizarre stuff going on and then that crazy grin from the Old Witch.

 

I had designs on that Weird Fantasy 21 as well, Richard. Looking at previous sales, I thought I would have a good shot at $8500, but not even close. It was quite an auction for EC's. Only ended up with 5 and got beaten down on many, many more in the final minutes.

haha. You probably would have swooped in and taken her from me! The closing price was right at my top bid. It's just one of those covers that's hard to forget, and it just doesn't come to auction that often.

 

Stealth and showing up are my best strategies :grin: I won a pedigree XELA one time, only because Cheetah didn't show up for that auction.

Note: Given the strong prices realized in this auction ...with the possible exception of one obvious case where I dropped the ball by not placing a bid... I'd have been lucky to pick-up one or two of these puppies.

 

In retrospect, I'm sure that there are at least a couple of folks happy that I chose to watch from the sidelines! lol

 

All those books just got a little cooler because they are the Cat list!

When Bill Gaines offered Russ Cochran any piece of original art from his collection, his first choice was Weird Science-Fantasy 29. Frazetta owned that one, so Cochran's second choice was HOF 18. Definitely a masterpiece.

That's an interesting story, I had not heard it before. Does Cochran still have it?

 

I think so. I don't believe he sold it with the rest of the EC OA when it came to market.

I'm pretty sure it's now owned by a different long-time collector of original art.
