Hulk 271--why does anybody care about this book?

186 posts in this topic

Alot of us dont like magazines. I don't . For disclosure I own both but for my collection i would rather have the Hulk 271 as its a comic book. Could care less what the value is (I don't buy to sell) . For me that's his first Comic Book APP. The market shows there are a few who don't like the magazines. I look as it as his first APP is Marvel Preview 7 and his first comic book APP is Hulk 271. only my opinion.

i wonder if it's a matter of growing up in the 60s or 70s (and 80s) where magazine sized comics (not to mention stuff like heavy metal) were a more prevalent part of your comic reading menu, so they are more desirable to that generation, or is it really just because they don't fit well into boxes?

my friend who ran a shop was of the opinion that subconsciously it was all about not fitting into boxes easily and trouble finding bags/boards. same was true for those long basketball cards from the 60s or 70s...for him they always sold worse than the shorter version because of storage issues

Thats a good question. I cant explain why I dont like the magazine books. Dont really have any other then a couple. I grew up in the 70's and 80's (born 67) . They dont feel or look like comic books to me. but really cant explain it.

Because magazine sized books don't fit into boxes properly. :pullhair:

Honestly it's a little of everything people have said above. This book will correct hard eventually, unless RR steals the show in GOTG and people fall in love which could prolong its demise.

magazine size CGC slabs are a nightmare, that could scare some folks off

and even if you are a 40something that grew up with more magazine-size stuff, maybe being black and white is a turn-off? i always liked them artistically though. there's probably a lot of stuff that looks swell to me as b&w that just looks ho-hum when in color (some conan stuff comes to mind, for example).

so how much is my [raw] 7.0ish marvel premiere first app of the racoon that I sold 8 or 9 months ago now worth? did i do my usual great job of timing the market and selling right before the price doubles?

Join the crew...i sold my Avengers #55 for $180 a year and a half ago. meh

So MP 7 is the first magazine appearance and Hulk 271 is the first comic appearance eh?

How come nobody has gotten in the CGC's ear to put some label notes in denoting such for MP 7 yet? It would put an end to some of the debate.

They've got 271 clearly indicating first appearance in comics.

My bad, I just did a quickie search for that slab and apparently found one that didn't have that notation. They clearly didn't have it at one point and now do.

Sure #271 has a better Rocket Racoon cover, but a second appearance is a second appearance. I wouldn't pay over $150 for a 9.8 copy, and I'd have to think about even paying that.

Who says 271's cover is better?

It's not. Hulk 271 is typical Al Milgrom mediocrity from the 80s. I thought Avengers Annual 10 was one of the, if not the, worst covers on a copper/bronze key but Hulk 271 has that beat by a mile. Just a horrible cover

Poor Al Milgrom.

:(

Don't look back man. Think about the guy who bought the next copy.

it's true, i dwell on the stuff i sold too early (thankfully i haven't been left holding too much stuff...although my magazine box full of generic 1970s/80s ghost riders were sellable for decent loot for the first time in 15 years right before the first movie came out and I didn't make enough of a dent in them when i had the chance), but there's plenty of stuff i timed relatively well...it's just some of those too early sales were relatively big money (for me) books like TOS 39 and B&B 28, both of which I made 200-300% profit on, but i could have made a 500% profit.
