BOX OFFICE PRO: Weekend Forecast

The Light Between Two Oceans

PROS:

– Early projected award buzz is strong, including potential Best Actress and Best Actor nods for Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender. Vikander won Best Supporting Actress last year for The Danish Girl and Fassbender received a Best Actor nomination for Steve Jobs. Both are at the top of their game in the business with Fassbender being a focal point in the summer blockbuster X-Men: Apocalypse and also has the upcoming December tentpole Assassins Creed. On the other hand Vikander’s career has been skyrocketing in recent years, especially after her aforementioned Oscar win last year and this Summer’s Jason Bourne greatly increasing her notoriety with North American audiences.

– To add to the film’s intrigue and romantic appeal Fassbender and Vikander have also been dating since filming wrapped at the end of 2014 and have been a staple of tabloid and gossip sites since, which only adds to its drawing power and awareness amongst its target audience.

– The novel by M.L. Stedman, from which the film is adapted, made the New York Times bestsellers list and has resided there for 63 weeks so far.

CONS:

– The subject matter will likely strike audiences as depressing: a couple who adopts a lost baby girl following the wife’s miscarriage and a stillborn, only to inadvertently ruin the lives of the adopted child’s birth parents as a result. Its subject matter will likely make it a one-quadrant film with older women making up the lion’s share of its ticket sales which should greatly limit its potential.

– The film has sat on a shelf for almost two years which is usually (though not always) a red flag for how it is going to be received by critics and audiences alike. Early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes have been mixed with a grade of 55% fresh at present.

Morgan

PROS:

– The blending of genres — part science fiction, part thriller, part horror — could appeal to several different audiences and demographics.

– Prior to filming, the screenplay had made the 2014 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. If word of mouth remains good, the film could have a solid hold.

CONS:

– Contrary to its co-opener this week lead star Kate Mara is hardly a box office draw, having never top-lined a $10 million opener in her career to date.

– Buzz has been especially weak for the film given the genre and subject matter which should appeal to a wide cross section of people. It has failed to even reach 25,000 Facebook likes so far, half of the total for The Light Between Oceans.

Don’t Breathe: $16,200,000 ($52,500,000)

Suicide Squad: $8,570,000 ($296,000,000)

Kubo and the Two Strings: $7,450,000 ($35,400,000)

Morgan: $6,900,000 ($6,900,000)

Pete’s Dragon (2016): $6,700,000 ($64,350,000)

The Light Between Oceans: $5,900,000 ($5,900,000)

Kate Mara doesn't help anything, though she's not bad, she's not a star. There's nothing she brings that her sister can't do a million times better, except maybe being bland.

Can 'Blair Witch' Scare 'Sully' from the Weekend's Top Spot?

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Leading the charge when it comes to Thursday night previews was Lionsgate's Blair Witch with $765,000 from ~2,300 theaters. Comparatively, Sinister 2 brought in $850k on Thursday and opened with $10.5 million and Crimson Peak brought in $855k on Thursday and opened with $13.1 million. Getting a bit closer to Blair Witch's release date we have The Visit, which brought in $1.02 million on Thursday before opening with $25.4 million. While Thursday previews don't exactly paint a perfect picture of how a film will before over the weekend these numbers do suggest Mojo's forecast of a $20+ million weekend may be in jeopardy.

Bridget Jones's Baby brought in $364,000 from 2,208 theaters last night. Comparisons for this title are extremely limited with the best to offer would be the December release of Annie, which brought in $360k on Thursday before opening with $15.8 million. For this film, however, that doesn't seem like too apt a comparison.

Open Road's Snowden brought in a reported $390,000 on Thursday night. Open Road reports this number does not include results from Wednesday night's Fathom screenings, putting its Thursday performance on par with Mechanic: Resurrection which opened with $7.4 million and just ahead of The Finest Hours which opened with $10.2 million. The studio has confirmed both the Fathom screenings and Thursday night previews will be rolled into Friday's gross.

- Sully (3,525 theaters) - $23.0 M

- Blair Witch (3,121 theaters) - $20.5 M

- Bridget Jones's Baby (2,927 theaters) - $14.5 M

- Snowden (2,443 theaters) - $6.8 M

- When the Bough Breaks (2,246 theaters) - $5.8 M

- Don't Breathe (3,208 theaters) - $5.1 M

- Suicide Squad (2,740 theaters) - $3.2 M

- Hillsong - Let Hope Rise (816 theaters) - $2.5 M

- Pete's Dragon (1,948 theaters) - $2.0 M

- The Wild Life (2,493 theaters) - $1.9 M

So at the end of this weekend, Suicide Squad should easily pass $310MM.

Fox Schedules Unannounced Marvel IMAX Movie

20th Century Fox has renegotiated with IMAX for continued partnership on several upcoming films including Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Predator, Alita: Battle Angel and most interesting enough - an Untitled Marvel movie.

Currently, Hugh Jackman's next solo Wolverine film will drop in 2017, and two Untitled Marvel films are slated for March 2, 2018 and June 29, 2018.

Fox is presently developing Deadpool 2, New Mutants, Gambit, a Fantastic Four sequel and a Stan Lee Biopic. There's also another X-Men film in development with both Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg confirming a '90s setting and expressing interest in tackling the Dark Phoenix storyline. It's widely believed that one of the 2018 release dates belongs to Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool sequel but it's anyone's guess as to what Fox's second 2018 Marvel release could be.

Deadpool?

Warner Bros. Dates Two Untitled "Event Films" For 2019 And 2020 - Might One Of Them Be THE BATMAN?

As Exhibitor Relations confirm below, Warner Bros. have dated two big releases for September 27, 2019, and February 7, 2020. We've been waiting for an official release date for Ben Affleck's solo Batman movie (currently dubbed "The Batman") for a while now, and there's certainly a decent chance it's the 2019 movie - but of course, there are many other possibilities.

The 2016 list has gotten really short.

2016

  • October 14, 2016 – The Accountant
  • October 21, 2016 – Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
  • November 4, 2016 – Doctor Strange
  • November 23, 2016 – Moana (Disney)
  • December 16, 2016 – Star Wars: Rogue One
  • December 21, 2016 – Assassin's Creed

But the road ahead is going to get real crowded.

J.K. Rowling Announces Five More Movies In The Harry Potter Universe

Warner Bros. has just confirmed that J.K. Rowling will continue the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them through five more feature films.

Fantastic Beasts was already set to receive two additional sequels, which were scheduled for November 16, 2018 and November 20, 2020 respectively, but that has been extended to five films, which will most likely keep the same every two years tracking. Even though the original film doesn't release until later this year, the studio is quite confident in the franchise. With the rousing success of the recent Cursed Child play, they know the audience is always hungry for more Harry Potter.

2016

  • October 21, 2016 – Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
  • November 4, 2016 – Doctor Strange
  • November 23, 2016 – Moana (Disney)
  • December 16, 2016 – Star Wars: Rogue One
  • December 21, 2016 – Assassin's Creed

Weekend Forecast: ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (Paramount)

PROS:

  • Tom Cruise has refashioned himself in the past decade as one of Hollywood’s go-to action stars, having only acted in one non-action film in the past eight years. The previous Jack Reacher in 2012 started with a $15.2 million opening weekend, and that was in December when opening weekend grosses are usually deflated.
  • The original Jack Reacher made $80.0 million total, a decent if not jaw-dropping sum.
  • The book series by Lee Child on which the films are based continues its popularity with more than 21 books to date and counting. Never Go Back is an adaption of book #18 of the same title, published in 2013.

CONS:

  • Considering other Cruise titles in the past decade which sold more tickets yet didn’t produce a sequel, like Knight & Day and Oblivion. Outside of the book’s fan base, was there a huge demand for another Jack Reacher?
  • Tom Cruise is 54 years old, around the same age as other notable action stars stopped being as big box office draws as they once were: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan. Could Cruise meet the same fate?
  • The Accountant, which topped the box office last week, is a similarly dark action film starring an A-list actor. It could provide some competition, especially if it experiences a mild decline in its second weekend. Although The Accountant is rated R as opposed to Never Go Back which is PG-13, which means that while it might be competition for the adult audience, it likely won’t be for teenagers as much.

Weekend forecast: $19,000,000
