FORBES.COM: 'Wonder Woman' Powering To Super $550+ Million This Weekend

Quote

Patty Jenkins' critically acclaimed DCU picture continues to enjoy strong audience word of mouth and repeat business carrying it toward an expected worldwide cume of roughly $550+/- million by close of business Sunday.

Adding an extra boost to the international totals, Wonder Woman has openings in Germany, Switzerland, Norway, and the Netherlands this weekend. Those receipts plus indications of solid holds in return markets and limited competition from other films suggest a strong $70+ million global total this weekend, after the film enters finishes the Monday-through-Thursday dates at somewhere between $480-485 million.

Lower-end estimates still gets the Amazonian princess to around $540 million, while higher-end potential could push it north of $560 million, particularly if other films already in the market slide even worse than anticipated -- a very real possibility, which we've seen play out several times already this summer. I'm expecting Wonder Woman to put up final worldwide numbers in the $555 million range after the dust settles this weekend.

Interestingly, if Wonder Woman takes $35+ million domestic as expected this weekend, it will top the third weekend total for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which sits above $835 million worldwide and still could have another $15 million to go before it finishes its run. The fact is, there are really only a few new releases on the horizon that really look likely to eventually cut more into Wonder Woman's weekly holds, and even then they'll probably merely send it closer to the more typical declines rather than actually causing steep drops. One is Transformers: The Last Knight arriving June 21, another is Despicable Me 3 on June 30, and then there's Spider-Man: Homecoming swinging into theaters July 7. And keep in mind, there are still several new markets for Wonder Woman to conquer in the coming weeks, including a key opening in Japan in July.

His fellow writer also published his own Wonder Woman summary, and had these estimates to share.

Now it probably won't catch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($368 million-and-counting) and Beauty and the Beast ($503m), but it stands to reason that unless Spider-Man: Homecoming and Despicable Me 3 both perform at peak level domestic box office over the next month (and nothing pulls a crazy surprise), we may enter November with Wonder Woman as the third-biggest grosser of the year in North American ticket sales.

At this juncture, barring a major drop against the likes of Transformers: The Last Knight, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming and War for the Planet of the Apes, I would argue that Wonder Woman is racing toward a final domestic gross of around $340 million, give or take. That would be above the domestic totals of Man of Steel ($291m in 2013), Batman v Superman ($330m in 2016) and Suicide Squad ($325m). Wonder Woman may or may not make it past the $668m worldwide cume of Man of Steel. So it is entirely possible that Wonder Woman will end up DC Film's biggest domestic grosser and lowest worldwide grosser.

Wonder Woman has already exceeded Man of Steel's revenue run. And going into its third weekend, there are major markets that just opened up, along with a few still pending.

Box Office: Today's The Day 'Wonder Woman' Tops $500M Worldwide

Quote

Wonder Woman earned another $6.03 million yesterday at the domestic box office. That's a dip of just 5% from Wednesday and 34% from last Thursday. It is still holding up in the same relative ballpark as the likes of Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Life of Pets, Finding Dory and The Jungle Book. That also brings its domestic total to $233.85m after two weeks of North American theatrical play. As of Wednesday, the Gal Gadot superhero movie had $255.4m overseas. That means, as of Thursday, it has earned at least $489.5m worldwide, along with whatever it made overseas yesterday. So, barring a fluke of near-impossible proportions, today is the day that Patty Jenkins becomes the fourth female director to notch a $500m+ worldwide hit.

So the film is almost certainly going to end Sunday with around $265 million domestic, or above the likes of The LEGO Movie ($256m), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259m) and The Amazing Spider-Man ($262m). The question is how well the incredibly leggy and popular picture will hold up against Walt Disney's Cars 3, Sony's Rough Night and Lionsgate's All Eyez On Me, all three of which could open above $20m (and obviously Cars 3 might crack $60m, especially with decent reviews). And then we'll be getting a relative onslaught for the rest of the summer, with Transformers: The Last Knight on Wednesday, Despicable Me 3 on the 30th, Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7 and War for the Planet of the Apes on the 14th. How will these sequels and reboots fare against something comparatively new and still relatively unique unto itself in the marketplace? We'll soon find out.

Fantastic!

Weird that it's not opening in Japan until it's essentially left U.S. theaters.

The rolling international release makes it hard to judge comparable international totals at the same point in time.

Regardless, I'm going to see this again tonight.

FORBES.COM: 'Wonder Woman' Soars Past $500M

Quote

In holdover news, Wonder Woman is having another jaw-droppingly good hold. The Gal Gadot superhero movie earned another $10.85 million on Friday, which was a drop of just 31% from last Friday. That brings its domestic total up to $244.677m in 15 days. We're looking at a $40m third weekend, which would be a drop of just 30%, and a new domestic total of $274.5m after 17 days of release. That would put it above the likes of The Amazing Spider-Man ($262m) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($259m). That would also put it ahead of Suicide Squad's 17 day total ($262m), meaning it is that-much-more likely to top that film's $325m domestic cume as well as Batman v Superman's $330m finish.

In terms of third-weekend grosses, if that $40 million number comes to pass, it'll be the 13th-biggest third weekend ever. And that alleged 30% drop would be smaller than the likes of Spider-Man (-36%), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (-39% over New Year's weekend), Finding Dory (-42%), The Dark Knight (-45%),  Alice in Wonderland (-45%) and The Avengers (-46%). The legs on this movie are just insane, to the point where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2  ($375m by tomorrow) may have to watch its back. Among all $100m+ openers, only Rogue One (-22% over New Year's) and The Jungle Book (-29%) will have had smaller third-weekend drops.

Oh, and it crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office yesterday for a new $517m worldwide cume. But we can go into more detail on its global cume tomorrow when we see if it made it past $550m.

'Wonder Woman' Has All-Time 4th-Best Third Weekend For Superhero Movie

Quote

Once again flying past expectations and topping high-end estimates, Warner Bros.' latest DCU entry Wonder Woman's third weekend in release is another one for the record books. Posting an estimated $40+ million domestic for the frame, director Patty Jenkin's critically acclaimed superhero blockbuster leapfrogged over two other films to take fourth place on the all-time charts for superhero movie third weekends.

Heading into this weekend, the top 5 highest grossing domestic third weekends at the box office for superhero movies were as follows:

1. The Avengers (2012) -- $55.6

2. Spider-Man (2002) -- $45 million

3. The Dark Knight (2008) -- $42.6 million

4. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2014) -- $38.8 million

5. Iron Man 3 (2013) -- $35.7 million

Wonder Woman was expected to challenge for the fifth spot on that list, with all signs pointing to a performance somewhere in the $35-36 million range in North America. That would've been an excellent hold after last weekend's $58 million take -- itself one of the best second-weekend holds in superhero genre history. Instead, the film seems to be dropping only 32% and amassing $40-41 million stateside.

That said, it's pacing significantly ahead of practically ever comparable major superhero release at this same point in their runs, including a laundry list of films that all topped $700-800 million. Taking into account the fact Wonder Woman opened lower than those other releases, these holds and its eventual $560-570+ million global cume after close of business Friday now all but assure Gal Gadot's Amazon princess will indeed finish its run north of $700 million.
