STAR WARS : The Force Awakens Dec, 18, 2015

Not sure how this works…

If we include yesterday's domestic numbers, TFA is at around $628 million today and still the #2 movie of 2015 under Jurassic World's $652.

It only needs to make $24 million today to officially pass it in 2015…but if for some reason it falls short of $24 million today, it will definitely pass it tomorrow.

Would this still mean that Jurassic World is #1 for 2015 or does it count that TFA was released in 2015 regardless of when it beats Jurassic World?

TFA is a 2015 movie. All of it's box office goes into 2015.

Yep, Avatar was released in December 2009, and it counts all the 2010 box office sales for 2009.

TFA is now over halfway to Titanic's adjusted gross of $1.130 billion domestically. And just shy of halfway to Avatar's worldwide gross. It won't have a problem blowing away the unadjusted domestic gross for all movies. Cracking the top 10 for adjusted gross is looking like a given. I would like to see it finish above Titanic (#5) on that list.

This weekend should do well domestically. The following week when kids are back in school will be interesting. And now that a release date has been announce for DVD/Blu-Ray (April 4), it shortens the legs this movie has at theaters. But, it has been doing so well so quickly, that may not matter.

American Sniper did 99.7% of its domestic gross in 2015 but was the highest grossing 2014 domestic release

Forecast: January 2016 Looks to Get Off to a Sizzling Start

2016 is looking to get off to a wonderful start. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is entering its third frame and is now joined by the wide release of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, playing in over 2,400 theaters. The largest first weekend of the new year came in 2010 when Avatar was playing for its third weekend and the top twelve grossed over $209 million. This weekend should top that number, delivering yet another box office record during Star Wars' impressive run.

The Force Awakens dropped 39.8% last weekend and has since crossed $625 million in record time. That 39.8% drop, however, takes into account the massive $57 million in Thursday night previews from opening weekend, take those Thursday numbers out of that opening weekend total and last weekend's drop was only 21.9%, suggesting a drop this weekend around 30% is very likely for another weekend north of $100 million. That's more than enough to top Avatar's current record for the largest third weekend of only $68.4 million, but more importantly will open up the extreme possibility the film will best Avatar's all-time domestic record of $760 million.

You need the full total for Week 2 on the Force Awakens.

Avatar graph is cumulative.

I thought the graph looked funny. Star Wars is beating Avatar domestically every day, but week 2 shows Avatar higher. Now I see why.

Avatar graph is cumulative.

Avatar opened on a Thursday, and the tracking from there on out for weekly results was every Thursday.

You've got $261M for Week 2 on The Force Awakens. That's just one week. It should be the total for both weeks... $600M+.

You think Avatar made $637M in the 8th week alone?

It's a running total. lol

Avatar by Week 8 had made a combined $637,605,653 domestic.

What was wrong when I dropped in the number is it took the weekly total. Not the .
