Conserved Grade?!?!

10 posts in this topic

The census does not list a category for "Conserved". Is this the "kinder and gentler" Restored?

Yes.

This label is applied to any comic book with specific repairs done to improve the structural integrity and long-term preservation. These repairs include tear seals, support, staple replacement, piece reattachment and certain kinds of cleaning.

There's a limit to the amount of work done and standards for the quality of work. CGC has said:

"Because all conservation repairs must be professionally done and slight in nature (A-1), the label will simply say “Conserved,” with no designation of quality or quantity on the label."

If you go on the Census for any title and click under Restored where it says "See Detail" you can see the exact population for any Restored or Conserved copies of that book.

Looking at the link it just says "Cover cleaned". So is that it? They only removed the cover, gave it an aqueous wash and re-attached it? If so that's one hell of a book, a previous 9.4 with it's dirty cover chemically cleaned.

I'm curious on what cleaning method was used on the cover (clearly nothing with a bleaching effect or other harsher chemicals. At most i'm thinking the cover was dry cleaned and then given a neutralizing wash for the acidity as well as removing any more deep seated dirt from it).

The book is a remarkable copy, it resided in a Fortress case, tucked away in a safe for past 20 years before going to CGC.

In hand the book showed no evidence of conservation or restoration, I even smelt the pages (habit from childhood) of course I wasn't smelling for possible cover cleaning. I'm by no means an expert and have no clue what a cleaned cover is supposed to smell or feel like, but to me it smelt and felt like any other of the hundreds of GA books I have fondled, apparently a highly qualified nose at CGC has detected an odor and formed an opinion that this otherwise pristine 9.4 has had it's cover cleaned :)

Judging by the grader notes I assume they did not detect any other conservation.

Grader Notes:

Bottom Spine Bindary Chip Out Bottom

Staple Small Tear

Cover cleaning (High quality) A-1

Right Top Front Cover Small Crease Breaks Color

Spine Lite Stress Lines

Spine Lite Wear Breaks Color

Top Spine Small Bindary Tear

I also would love to know what kind of cleaning if any :)

There is an ASM 1 out there with cover cleaned resto. It's resto. You can call it whatever you want. I would rather have seen it up at auction as an 8.0 than a 9.2 cover cleaned. They ruined the book.

+1

"Conservation" is still restoration.
