Something tells me the Tec 31 "sale" fell through

Not sure how you reached this conclusion since your link takes us to a 0.5 Poor copy of Detective 31.

I believe the copy that we are talking about is the 2.5 copy with brittle pages that sold for $42K, as per the link below:

I think he's referring to the .5 that sold for $22k+ in March.

I wonder if there might be some resistance to having it keep up with superhero keys as they shoot past the low six figures.

I suspect there will be. I think it will end up between $71K—$84K.

I'm with the over $100K folks. It's (apparently) the best available copy of a super tough book. Given the prices we have seen lately for any high grade copy of any GA issue that can be called a key or semi-key or quasi-key in any way, shape, or form, less than $100K would be an astonishing result, I think.

Personally, I don't see why this book has the reputation it does. I don't see it as a "key or semi-key or quasi-key." It's not historically significant. It does not introduce anything important. It's not a "first" of any kind. It's not even a superhero book. It's a "cool cover only" book. And, for me, it's not even close to what I think of as Schomburg's best and most iconic covers.

Taste is entirely personal, so I'm not doubting it might top $100K because of folks whose tastes differ from mine. But if it does, I'll never understand why.

My bad then!

Maybe the initial buyer of the 0.5 Poor copy saw the 2.5 copy and decided to upgrade and hence put the 0.5 copy back out for the next auction. (shrug)

Probably realized that although the 2.5 copy went for a ridiculous price, it was still mot as ridiculous as what he had paid for the 0.5 copy. doh!

You just never know.

Definitely possible. No one really knows besides Metro.

I'll never understand why this painting sold for 43.8 million...

The coked out buyer must've seen something in it hm

:screwy: is what I think. Then again there are several fine art pieces out there that have sold in the milliions and yet it looks something like that. Just don't get it.

Good analogy. I don't get it either. Newman's color field paintings, like his colleague Rothko's, sure don't ring my bells. But, as I said, there's no accounting for taste. That particular painting was sold by Paul Allen, who I'm sure made about about $40 million on the deal. AND HERE'S THE KICKER: IT WAS RESTORED (SURFACE CLEANED BECAUSE SOMETHING SPILLED ON IT)!

Having said all that, though, that painting is historically significant in the art world. Suspense 3, not so much in the comic world.

I think one has own a copy to understand the whole thing. The book is a classic cover which has it all as posted by Primetime in a recent response.Loving the art form and what it stands for to a collector is hard to understand to most.My Punch 12 is no big deal to most but to me it is like an Action 1 to a Sups collector just to own one is enough. One doesn't have to understand why we love the book just enjoy the ride we collectors have.
