Missing Church Books

60 posts in this topic

I've been going through the original catalog looking for books from Edgar's collection that presumably haven't been seen since Chuck sold them way back when.

I'm an Atlas-centric collector so one that jumped out at me was this:

Venus 19 NM+

Wow, wow, wow, where is this hiding...

Anyway, I wanted to start this thread to see what other Church books are also missing in action that people would desperately like to see.

The 1977 catalog is here:

http://www.milehighcomics.com/catalog/main.html

Maybe we can shake a scan of one or two loose...who knows.

Take Chuck's grades with a grain of salt. His NM+ is probably anything but with today's grading standards. Plus, you never know how many hands it has traveled through and what its journey has been like. Still, I suspect it would be a higher grade copy of a tough and sought after book

I've always wondered why nobody has put together a list that includes the books that were sold off prior to that catalog.

The Venus 19 was the one belonging to John McLaughlin and auctioned off raw on Ha.com as a 8.5.

After he died, I think HA auctioned off his collection, which contained a number of Church books he had bought from Chuck before the catalog. Included were at least two Baker books: Teen-Age Romances 2 and 3. As I recall from a thread not too long ago, I believe a boardie owns these.

Boardie Robotman spoke of buying Church books out of boxes from Chuck at a show..... I believe it may have been pre-catalogue, and he still has some of them and posted scans in his thread. One thing about comic fandom in the late 70's, things were very cheap and many collectors didn't care about preservation..... they just wanted copies to pile up and read. The books may no longer be pedigree quality, owners may have died and books may have been tossed. GOD BLESS...

I've been working on putting together a definitive collection of the Church data. Right now, I've got a CSV with all the books from the catalog merged with all the known CGC graded books. I'd love to put together info on the books that weren't listed and haven't been CGC graded. You can see the CSV here:

https://github.com/roblarsen/Edgar-Church-Collection-Data/blob/master/merged-data.csv

click "raw" if you'd like to download it

Teen-Age Romances 2 and 3 are missing from your list but both are in the Heritage archives as raws. The 3 does show up on GPA as a CGC 6.5. I'm pretty sure the 2 was also graded and a boardie has it.
