Happy Birthday Sal Buscema!

27 posts in this topic

In honor of Sal Buscema's birthday today, I just posted a bunch of old comic art ads featuring splashes and covers by Sal to:

www.comicartads.com

These ads were published from 1977 to 1999 and feature some really nice examples of Sal's work.

And here's a link to one of my favorite Sal Buscema pages from my art collection, and probably the piece by Sal that I have owned for the longest amount of time:

What is your favorite piece of Sal Buscema art from your collection?

Happy birthday Sal! Best regards, Lee

And easy choice for me, because it also happens to be the favorite piece I own (at least so far). Which would be this one:

Yes, yes, marvel at it in awe and heap the praise... you know, for Sal. ;)

Hi James! I didn't realize you had that Tombstone cover. That's awesome! What a great bad guy with staying power. And Unca Ben, your Avengers page is so sweet! Hyperion never looked better. Thanks for sharing guys!

Thanks, Lee. I LOVED Tombstone back in those days. Not just because he was an actually menacing kind of villain, but because he had no special powers. He was just a really "tough" guy. And yet, he actually gave Spidey a good fight (in SSM #142, just a few issues after this one). That made him something special among Spider-Man villains at the time. So, to own the cover of his origin and what is likely the best cover shot of him ever is something truly special for me.

Of course, a few years later Marvel had to ruin him and give him super-powers. But that doesn't diminish the great impact of this cover. :)

I love Sal's work -- he was one of those guys who worked effortlessly within the house style, even as it changed. Lots of highlights for me, but this is the only piece of his I own:

And he drew one of my very very very few outstanding Grails, any one of the various "Elf with a Gun" pages. He sold them in the '70s, apparently.

Happy birthday Sal!

By far, my favorite artist and a true gentleman. I met his at his lifetime achievement award in Baltimore a couple years ago and found to be very humble and generous with his time.

I try to post a happy birthday thread on my site each year and this years thread caught fire. Between WP, Twitter, and FB I am seeing hits and comments in the thousands which puts a smile on my face as I don’t always think he gets the acclaim deserved.

Don’t have proper scans of my Sal stuff in CAF but here is a quick pic of apage I was trading notes with Benny G about – ends up I acquired this from him – with a stop in another collector’s collection in between.

Did I say I am always looking for Sal’s art lol

Happy Birthday Sal, here is my favorite Sal piece in my collection. Its the full splash from MTU 58 that was the inspiration for the cover. He is one of my favorite artists, especially his 70s work. I actually prefer his work to John's. Also, Sal evolved with the times. He kept working at a professional viable level for 6 Decades, no one else can say that (Seriously, his skill alone and ability to adapt has allowed him to be the only guy still standing after nearly 50 years).

That he still gets work on mainstream titles on his ability alone, should speak volumes.

Happy Birthday, Legend!

Hi James! I really love your MTU 58 splash. I used to own page 1 and 2 of that book. Pablo Marcos's inks were really sharp on that issue. I think Sal's short run on MTU before John Byrne and Dave Hunt took over was really great-looking, in part due to Sal's great, clear storytelling skills, and the fine inking he received from Marcos and Hunt on those few issues. Cheers, Lee
