I see this quite a bit with the Super Powers line (and it's upsetting):

That's a Superman made-in-Mexico.  AND the authentication is coming from the seller???  Conflict of interest there.

Welp, not-for-nothing, but while Tom Derby is a human being he definitely knows his stuff. He's one of the top-most authorities on Kenner pre-production items, no matter what line.

So I started collecting Lego Minifigures. I  decided I wanted to stick to the nicer/rarer stuff because that’s how I like to collect. After looking for a Facebook group devoted to “better”minifigures, I realized there wasn’t one.  So I started my own. We discuss figures costing more than $30, which is about the top 10 percent on eBay. We need people.

And here’s a photo of a sweet minifigure I just picked up.

"Tom Der*.." that's all I need to hear for authentication to know it's good. If he says it's good, it's good, no question. His reputation is impeccable for a reason, the only person you could say that about. He's on his own level. Not to dismiss the other guys that are specialists at their specific lines, but Tom. Knows. ALL.

And will get the info if he needs it, a rare occurrence.

Alright.  I guess TD knows what he's talking about.  Just bothers me seeing a listing like that without anything other than the sellers "word".  Could have done a comparison photo with the Made in Mexico.  Could have taken a photo of the bottom of the feet.  coulda coulda coulda

The  Mega Construx Battle Cat was bigger then I thought it would be.  Fits 6" figures.

That's pretty cool! I passed on this (and the sword and staff) because I was only collecting the minifig scale-sized figures and sets. But I might have to grab this one!

...but that's part of the knowledge of the hobby. You have to know the players that have paid their dues. I still get questions about Kenner Super Powers and Mattel Secret Wars and I stopped updating my archives and writing for my blog well over a decade ago. I was known as one of a couple experts, full stop. So if I said something was something, it was. I'd done the research and knew things that the average hobbyist didn't. Even then, there were a few people that I'd defer to for information that were far above me, again because they'd done MORE research and knew MORE. Tom Derby certainly was one of those people. Tom Neiheisel was another. James Gallo, Mike Mensinger. They all knew more than I did. That's just the way it is.
