This one isn't a Whitman, but comes from Modern Comics. I've always understood that these are the same folks who published Charlton reprints with a blue and white Modern logo, and sold them in packs. That is helpful, thanks. I wonder why Marvel would have Whitman distribute some, and Modern Comics distribute others during the same time period? Any idea what the 'MP' logo over the price stands for? Modern Promotions... they did indeed do the Charlton reprints in the late 70's and the some Archie Giant-Size issues as well. The 'W' logo on the display also makes me think Whitman had more to do with these books than I originally thought. I assumed if it didn't have a W logo version of the book then Whitman didn't touch it, but it appears they did, even from the beginning (#1)? Has anybody else seen a counter display like this for books other than this and Star Wars? I seem to have a blurry memory of seeing one for Superman/Ali, but it may have been a dream. Never seen this in all my years of collecting, out of all the comic related stuff I have seen before, this is one of the coolest, how many copies are in the display? Here are some images I pulled from the Internet. It looks like there were two versions. This one is mine. At least take the horizontal banding off. I love that one too! That's a lovely copy! I have a copy of each (DC and Whitman) and, even with copies going for $500 after Ali passed. I couldn't bring myself to sell either. The display originally came with 24 copies, just like the Star Wars shipper, but when I bought this it only came with one copy. I feel like it's all or nothing - I should either leave it in its complete, original packaging, or open it all up and fold the display - ready for the shelf. The box has been held together like this for 40 years while hundreds of others have disintegrated - it must be working. I am tempted to open it though! And since you posted this one - have you all ever seen this before? Key Comics was selling it on eBay not too long ago. I had never heard of this before, but it's cool! From the looks of it - Ali and his friends liked the Adams version! I wonder if Kubert was originally supposed to draw the interior, or if Adams was always going to do it?
