General discussion thread - keep the other threads clean

I always thought it was one thread per as well but the rules are vague. I do know if a newbie started 2 threads in a section for any reason they would have the rules linked in their thread pretty quick.

Without all the beating around the bush, it looks like you guys are talking about BK's three threads. The one was started 12/30 and got a bump. Not sure if that should count. The other two are relatively close in time. I would give him a pass, but he is a pretty good friend of mine so . . .

Actually there are 2 offenders. ;)

I PM'd Brian about it and thought it was general discussion worthy. I have noticed a vast difference between how that 'rule' is used on newbies vs senior members.

The bush beating was unintentional. :taptaptap:

Or to follow the latest trend.

I did some digging, and as near as I can tell, the last time this topic was brought up was in mid-2008. It looks as if that debate lead to Arch creating the various Marketplace sub-forums.

The arguments at the time for multiple threads were mostly people wanting to have:

1) Separate threads for GA / SA / BA / CA / Moderns, or

2) Separate threads for dollar bin material vs. high value keys.

I'm pretty certain that the three thread rule-of-thumb I mentioned earlier was from the old days when we had a single sales forum in the Marketplace. Re-reading the 2008 debate, it seemed that even then, some people thought three threads were too many.

I'd say two threads per sub-forum should be okay, but only if there's a very good reason to separate material. Perhaps we might want to conduct a poll of regular marketplace users to see what is acceptable?

So what happened to that "comics for kids charity" sales thread? The one where the charitable organization hadn't been officially registered since 2010 and the seller's eBay account was selling jailbait porn star posters in addition to the comics listed here?

It looked like it was shaping up to be awesome Friday entertainment, but I can't find any trace of it today... Did I miss a good flame war or did the mods yank the thread before the seller could come back to respond to the allegations?

The seller came back, defended the Traci Lords posters, comparing them to some sort of "art", never mind the fact that there were auctions, ostensibly, for the benefit of children right next to posters for films that the FBI seized as child pornography.

Then he feigned some sort of racial outrage that one poster was calling him out on his race...never mind that no one mentioned race or even knew the race of the seller in the first place.

He never did address how he could collect donations (cash and goods) as a not for profit corporation that acts as a charity for children when the organization (using the terms at its loosest definition) has never been a licensed not for profit, isn't an active corporation at all, and has not been officially recognized as a charity by the IRS in any capacity. I am sure that's what CGC, Harley Yee, GPA, and Wizard all envisioned when they threw their support behind comics4kids, that their name, and their support would be side by side with this sort of thing.

He mentioned that he ran into some "delays" getting recognized as a charity or tax exempt.

Oddly, the Diamond Scoop article from 2003 mentioned that he was working on having tax exempt status then.

A Registered 501©(3) by early 2004?

Those are some delays for a 3-5 months process.

There was no response as to why it's taken nearly 16 years and no tax exempt charity status to date or why the corporation that people are supposedly supporting in their literature hasn't been active and is showing inactive and expired for about 16 months back to 2010.

The thread got pulled and deleted, I didn't see a reason posted, but it was probably for the best. Instead of doing the right thing and answering all the valid questions from people that would be extremely supportive of this endeavor IF IT WAS DONE CORRECTLY, he attacked everyone and made smart assed comments back at them.

The OP said he contacted Paul L. to have it removed. He started a new thread in the dealers section.

Thanks. (thumbs u

Looks like it's been sanitized to avoid controversy this time. Too bad, the previous one looked like a thread with huge entertainment potential.

Yeah, still feel uneasy about how things were left so I posted in the advertising thread asking for further clarification as to whether this was indeed a charitable auction. Also, reminded the poster of the rules to sell on the forums (OP claimed that in part the reason for the mess was folks not reading his initial post). Unfortunately, I did read it and there were a number of issues...I initially figured it was for a good cause and did not give the old :baiting::preach::baiting: over rules, but perhaps that was a poor decision on my part?

I didn't see that, maybe we will get some questions answered after all. Somehow I doubt it.

If I were the OP I would want that thread pulled too.

Here it is for ease of folks checking it out, and if questions/concerns remain.

Well he's deleted ALL of the "Rah!! Rah!! Let's do it for the kids" and "Wizard and GPA and CGC and Harley Yee have all donated to the cause".

Now it's straight for sale thread without all the implications that these auctions are for charity. Probably for the best since he couldn't/refused to answer very simple questions about what the money was for, how it was going to be used, etc.

People were donating books, listing them in that original thread, assuming it was going directly to the kids. I don't think they ever got an answer. I don't think that was an accident.

He stateds what the money is for in the ebay auctions. The pic that shows up before you click on the auction is Comix4Kids. When you read the description, it says he needs money to get to the con. His defense in the deleted thread was his name was attached to the org so, he has the right to raise funds to get to the con. I am saddened by this. :(

For anyone with a desire to donate comics to a registered charity and to kids who are sick, in need, or developmentally disabled I have posted some information in Comics General that should prove valuable.

In 30 minutes on the phone yesterday I found three amazing charitable institutions that would give the comics directly to the children that they help every day. They would also provide a receipt for the donation or validate a receipt generated by the donor detailing the donation.

Comics Donated to Charity.

There are organizations like this in every major (and minor ) city in the country and all over the world.

If the urge to help is there, we have solid, established, registered outlets to fulfill that urge.

Personally, I think C4K is a good idea, but I think the OP has gotten in over his head. I tried to help years ago, but couldn't volunteer all of my time to push the 501©(3) application through the IRS. At the time, I gave him my advice and personal experience of the process, and tried to get him to be up front and clear to all potential donors that their donations would NOT be tax deductible.

That's why my post in the thread was regarding whether or not they had officially been recognized by the IRS. He's at least honest when dealing with direct questions, but I think his marketing attempts are at best misguided. I think his heart is in the right place, but he needs donations to get up and running and can't fund it himself.

+1 - thanks for taking the time the other day and today!

I am looking to contact Children's Hospital in Boston to donate some of my old back issues that I no longer want/need. I used to work at a DYS revocation unit and gave a box a year to the teacher (disclosure: she became my wife) that used the books to make collages and to have the kids (guys) create their own comic strips.

I now will contact the organization you have included also.

Here it is for ease of folks checking it out, and if questions/concerns remain.

How can this be allowed? Obviously the thread was deleted, which I am of the opinion that it should not have been (I didn't have the chance to read what has been discussed above). If it is a simlpe sales thread (or advertisement thread) now, should it not then get deleted as well seeing the seller is a shame, liar, to name but a few. This is truly frustrating and upsetting so say the least.
