Thanks, just something I noodled with while bidding on Batman comics last night. Thank God there's no horrific Batman covers

Bring them in @Martin Sinescu - I may change the title to 'Horrific Covers'. Don't see why Spidey should get all the fun ?

I've never really liked this one to be honest. Shameful cover for such an important key.

I used to own a pretty high grade copy of that book and I absolutely loved the reds!

I actually like that cover!

At least it doesn't taste like horse.

Actually, being British, I have no idea what that tastes like.

Unless, I had some Findus 'beef' lasagne with it in ?

Horse is like beef, only with a sweet finish.  I would liken it to pronghorn antelope in the wild sector.  Good stuff...., bofum.

That #31 cover is one of my favorites.  I think of it as a silver age version of Detective 31.  While the 'Tec 31 is primitive, it set the tone for Batman's character and it was just so emblematic for Bob Kane's vision of that character.

Same can be said for the ASM 31.  It is very primitive, but that is its charm.  You will never see another cover like it.  Its design sticks with you as well.  Plus, it puts off perfectly Ditko's vibe that he established.  His Spiderman looked mysterious with his squinty eyes and his quirky postures.

I like much of Romita, but his main contribution to the art in the Marvel universe was that he established a "meat and potatoes/ house style."  Aside from obvious greats like 39, 50, and maybe a few others, nothing he did impacted me in the way much of Ditko's pieces did.  Romita never had anything as awkward looking as that 1st Kraven cover because his house style was so consistent, but, at least for me, he just didn't make the covers that captured my imagination like most all of Ditko's did.

(Speaking of awesome Ditko, any fans of his X Men interpretation in TOS 49?  That is interesting to me in that it is his only work for that group.)

Explains why it went unnoticed by the general public in that tasty lasagne.

Ditko could've been quite limited in what he could draw on #31's cover by having to avoid giving away the identity of The Master Planner.

I won't spoil.

Goat and sheep are the only animals I've ever noticed that had a nasty taste that was fairly consistent.  Older moose can have an off-iodine taste.  Venison that has been trimmed and kept properly is delicious, but if it has been ill-kept, it will be on par with goat or sheep.

I've had several people tell me that bear is terrible, but I'm again thinking that what they had must have been ill-kept, as the three or four that I've eaten we're delicious.

When it comes down to Ditko and Romita, it's not even close.

In his 41 issue run Ditko created, pretty much on his own, one of the best rogue's galleries in comics :
The Chameleon, the Vulture, the Tinkerer, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, the Lizard, Electro, the Big Man and the Enforcers, Mysterio, the Green Goblin, Kraven the Hunter, the Scorpion, Princess Python, Spencer Smythe's Robots, Crime-Master, the Molten Man, the Cat, and the Looter.  21 total in 41 issues.
Dynamic covers (IMO) that told a story and created a mood that was never duplicated in Spidey after Ditko left the book.

I love Romita, don't get me wrong, but... in Romita's first Spider-Man run consisting of 58 issues he co-created, with help from Stan (and fill-in artists Heck & Buscema) :
The Rhino, the Shocker, Kingpin, Man Mountain Marko, Silvermane, the Prowler, the Kangaroo (heh), and the Schemer.  8 total in 58 issues.
More issues, more help, less villains, and other than the Kingpin, Shocker & Rhino , they were mostly forgettable.
Nice, slick covers (with the exception of #55) but lacking in the tone that Ditko brought to the title.

...and that's just the villains. i won't list the difference in the number of supporting characters.

I gotta defend my man, Ditko (we all know he won't do it)

Complete opposite opinion.  But to each their own.

I'm judging strictly by the cover.

Wanna discuss interiors?  Romita Goblin makes Ditko Goblin look like Ditko phoned it in.

I believe we can get venison at the supermarket here in the UK, also possibly ostrich.

Very impressed that you've eaten three or four entire bears.  Sounds more addictive than bacon.

That would be a lot of meat to cut up into conveniently-sized steaks; quite a few hundred kilograms. Then again, American home freezers are much larger than the ones we use here, so I can imagine that quantity's feasible to store over in Oregon.
